The Department of Public Works

Postby Arctic Banana » Tue Sep 03, 2019 1:24 am

So one of my concepts was the idea of a planet settled by multiple different colonies (New Argos, Mariposa, Nova Brettonia, etc) rather than a single unified planetary government, and military disputes between nations are settled with official regulated battles instead of through war (totally not blatantly ripped off from Zoids, I don't know what you're talking about, stop asking any more questions).

ImageDept. of Public Works "Yellow Team"
The Department of Public Works is a group of city workers who decided to form their own team and make their way in the battle circuit. Conveniently, heavy construction tools make for pretty savage weapons.

The team leader, the Foreman, is a modified Commissar equipped with a jury-rigged buckler and a thermal cannon used for melting asphalt from a safe distance.
The Foreman: d6Rd d6Rd d6B d6Y d6Y d6W d6W (Thermal cannon, Jury-rigged buckler, Advanced sensor package)

The team's second-in-command pilots a Jackrabbit usually equipped with concussive missiles intended for avalanche control, and the arms replaced with a double-barreled cannon and a shield, but the missile pods can be switched out with the standard survey equipment if they feel more spotting will be useful in the coming match, or a hybrid of the two.
Jackrabbit Avalanche Control variant: d6Rd d6Rd d6Ra d6Ra d6B d6B d6W d6W (Arm-mounted cannon, Missile pods, Shield)
Jackrabbit Survey variant: d6Y d6Y d6B d6G d6W d6W (Survey equipment, Construction-vehicle-grade armor, No ranged weapons)

The Contractors are a pair of Conscripts, one armed with a powerful tandem dual jackhammer that makes short work of concrete and the other with a flamethrower for starting counterfires in wildfire situations.
Earthbreaker: d6Rh d6Rh d8Rh d6B d6Y d6W d6W d8G (Tandem jackhammer, Construction-vehicle-grade armor, Standard sensors, No ranged weapons)
Defoliator: d6Rd d6Rh d6B d6Y d6G d6W d6W (Flamethrower, Construction-vehicle-grade armor, Standard Sensors, Off-road suspension)

The Laborer is a general-purpose construction and heavy labor frame. Its pilot foregoes weaponry in favor of closing in fast and getting real punchy.
Laborer: d6Rh d6Rh d8Rh d6B d6Y d6W d6W d8G (Big punchy fists, Construction-vehicle-grade armor, Standard Sensors, No ranged weapons)

The Holedigger occupies a sort of gray area between a frame and a vehicle. It's an all-terrain frame-vehicle that digs holes. Not much else to say about it, except that it's built for a purpose and very good at it, and that its drill is just as devastating to frame armor as it is to rock.
Holedigger: d6Rh d6Rh d6B d6Y d6G d6W d6W d8G (Rock auger, Construction-vehicle-grade armor, Construction spotlights, All-terrain suspension, No ranged weapons)

The light labor frame (left) is equipped with a modified bolt gun (like the one from "Alien: Isolation", not the Warhammer 40K one). The heavy hardsuits wield simple tools that are nonetheless effective weapons. The Hazardous Environment Frame (halfway between a large hardsuit and a small frame) carries a high-output cutting/welding laser. (Instructions can be found on Nerf & Lego Fun's YouTube channel).
Labor Frame: d6Rd d6Rd d6B d6Y d6G d6W d6W (Bolt gun, Construction-vehicle-grade armor, Construction spotlight, All-terrain suspension)
Construction Hardsuits: d6Rh d6Rh d6Y d6G d6W d6W d8G (Tools, Antenna, Maneuver pack, No ranged weapons)
HEF: d6Rd d6Rh d6B d6Y d6G d6W d6W (Construction laser, Construction-vehicle-grade armor, Antenna, Maneuver pack)
If playing Dungeons & Dragons has taught me one thing, it's that you should probably not trust someone who introduces themselves with the phrase "GREETINGS FELLOW MORTALS IT IS I."

What a great looking Unit! Not only is there a uniformity of color, but you also bring out a good point of how "heavy construction tools make for pretty savage weapons." And for those of us who have seen the movie "Aliens" we know the ending scene with Ripley facing the Queen is a testament to that. And who of us wouldn't want to pilot something as simple yet awesome as that. This Unit brings that concept to life. Very nice work.
