Wombat APC

Postby Artasid » Tue Jan 22, 2019 1:01 am

The Wombat Armored Personnel Carrier has seen service for nearly 60 years. It has proven to be a reliable transport for infantry, supplies and official personnel. However, in the past, the Wombat was also a prime target when it was deploying troops onto the battlefield.
Once the enemy realized the Wombats were troop transports, they would often make surprise strikes against the hovercraft, in hopes of destroying it along with the infantry still in its compartments. Successful deployment of additional troops to the front line had dwindled to 30% and wartime commanders did not like these new statistics.
The original Wombats however were merely unarmed hovertrucks with adequate armor plates. Suggestions were made to improve the survivability of the vehicle, and thus increase successful troop deployment. Yet most suggestions were rejected due to the fact that most ideas focused on giving the Wombat an offensive weapon, and reducing it's overall infantry compartment size significantly to accommodate the weapon and its ammo.

Though one suggestion was approved: to include a single defensive machine gun turret to provide covering fire when unloading the infantry. Some commanders disregarded this suggestion because it too reduced the compartment size, but only by a mere 1/5th from its original capacity. Regardless, the design was approved and almost immediately the improved Wombat showed potential.
During the 2 week battle at the Gorgon Canyon, the improved Wombats were able to deploy their troops and even evacuate wounded personnel under the protection provided by the new machine gun turret.
Since the inclusion of the turret, with a 360 degree firing range, the successful troop deployment rate had improved to 85%.

This one's really nice! I like the use of a machinegun as a blue system. That's inspired.

Could you also offer pictures from other angles. This vehicles looks really nice and I would like to see more.

Though the Wombat APC has shown moderate success with the addition of a defensive turret, there were still wartime commanders who insisted that the Wombat would be of better use on the battlefield if it had a more offensive punch. However, before the addition of the turret, it was argued that doing so would hamper the Wombats intended purpose as an Armored Personnel Carrier, and thus most offensive suggestions were ignored. But there were some commanders who refused to go unheeded and instead took it upon themselves to outfit a Wombat for limited combat operations:

Combat Wombat: d6Ra d6Ra Missile Tubes, d6B Defensive Machine Gun Turret, d6B Armor Plates, d6G LowGrav Hover Drive

By relocating the defensive turret and severely reducing the Infantry compartment, this Wombat is hoped to serve as a light Troop Transport and Long Range Harasser on the battlefield. Fans of the previous improved Wombat feel this newest addition is an abomination to the intended role of the APC and thus far the new modification is met with criticism and controversy. Though it does show potential for limited combat, this prototype has not yet been field tested.

Only moderately satisfied with the inclusion of a long range weapon to the Wombat APC, insistent commanders commissioned a Wombat APC redesign to give it lasting combat prowess. Under the stress of the demands, the Wombat engineers have created another modified Wombat design which now focuses more on firepower than the conventional transport the Wombat is known for, essentially converting the unassuming APC into a troop transporting Tank.

Attack Wombat: d6Rd d6Rd Top Cannon, d6B Defensive Machine Gun Turret, d6Y Headlights, d6G LowGrav Hover Drive

With this newest model in production, an all APC company had been created to make use of each ones customized roles: the Wombat Battle Company

Critics and controversy still linger over the newer Wombat designs, however, there are commanders who believe these modifications are an improvement.

I hope you enjoyed because I certainly had fun coming up with these different loadouts while trying to keep the familiar theme. Let me know what you think. As always, I eagerly await any and all comments you wish to share.

These are really decent builds, love the turret design, and of course I love the backstory with it :)

Though the Improved, the Combat, and the Attack Wombat models have all had relative success on the battlefield, many of the crews, (especially of the Combat or Attack variants) tend to forget that the Wombat is first and foremost meant as a Troop Transport. Many times, the crew commander of one of the armed Wombats would often mistake their vehicle as a tank meant to stay in combat. This led to many lost crews and Wombats that could have been avoided. As a reminder, let us gaze upon the Original Wombat APC and it's strictly limited combat presence.

Original Wombat: d6B Armored Ramps, d6Y Headlights, d6G LowGrav Hover Drive

(In all honesty, I have nearly forgotten this build and had not yet posted it here)

To further emphasize its Troop Transport role, a more armored variant has been designed, with an additional feature that allows the vehicle to penetrate most obstacles and fortifications in order to unload its infantry passengers within the heart of enemy locations.

Wombat Charger: d6Rh d6Rh Ramming Targe, d6B d6B Multiple Defense Turrets, d6G LowGrav Hover Drive.

This model of Wombat has survived plenty of rigorous and harsh testing and is now being deployed for situations that require penetrating enemy fortifications and barricades. Fans of the Original and Improved Wombat APC feel this addition is most welcomed and is not as criticized as those with combat abilities.

By removing the internal infantry compartment all together, a new Wombat redesign has been given even more combat capabilities. However, even with the added weaponry the overall design of the Wombat was never meant for extended combat sorties of any type. Wartime commanders seem to misunderstand the purpose of the Wombat and have been trying numerous times to produce a product that suits their needs. It is unlikely this newest model will be favored over the classic Armored Personnel Carrier.

Such a versatile little vehicle. It reminds me of the Space Marine Rhino, Eldar Wave Serpent, and Tau Devilfish: one APC chassis, so many different payloads.

The original commissioners of the first Wombat feel the overcustomizing of their design has in effect, bastardized the concept of the vehicle and it's intended purpose. Though the weaponed variants aren't without their charms, they are still flawed. One critic was sited:

"Putting offensive weapons on a Wombat is like pulling the pin on a grenade and forgetting to throw it. It's gonna go off in your face."

And this statement has on several occasions proven correct, as many crew commanders overestimate the Wombats capabilities in combat, overtaxing the vehicle by remaining in combat far longer than allowed. The Wombat does have adequate armor to protect it and its occupants from sidearms and light combat weapons, but utterly fail when exposed to frontline fire where heavier weapons are more often used. Improper deployment has been the cause of 60% of Wombat destruction, and wartime commanders seem to think the APC is expendable. The troops they carry, however, are NOT!
In an attempt to rectify the bad reputation that has started to befall the Wombat, the original commissioners have proposed a new generation Wombat, one with increased survivability, so that if others take it upon themselves to alter this design for combat, it will perform far better than its predecessor.

Wombat Gen2: d6B Defensive Machine Gun, d6B Armored Rollbar, d6Y Floodlights, d6G LowGrav Hoverdrive, d8G No Ranged Weaponry

In addition to added defenses, it also allows for extra systems. Plus it's height profile has been slightly reduced to decrease it's chance of getting hit. Again, it cannot be stressed enough that the Wombat is not meant for frontline action, however it is believed that if this latest model is properly customized, as well as properly deployed, then it will have improved performances.

As predicted, the moment the first batch of the second generation Wombat Armored Personnel Carriers came off the assembly line, wartime commanders have begun designing weaponized versions of their own. The first prototype armed Gen2 Wombat carries a long range mortar cannon, a tracking beacon, and a frontal hardpoint system which is assumed to mount a variety of different systems, from headlights, to extra armor, and even additional weaponry. Perhaps with the overall sturdier design, this version of the Wombat may fair better than it's armed Gen1 counterparts.

A new improved Wombat often brings new and improved alterations and one such design has been gaining a lot of attention. This redesign removes the infantry compartment all together and transforms the simple APC into a combat ready tank! Reminiscent of battles long in Terras past, this version of the Wombat has proven that tank warfare is as relevant in todays battlefield as it was centuries ago.
