MFZ not just about the Mecha?

Postby OrangeKNight » Fri Mar 30, 2012 2:24 am

Is there anything in particular stopping me from using MFZ's Frame rules to due vehicles? I'm as Mecha obsessed as much as the next guy, but I'm also a big fan of combined arms, sometimes, you just want a big 'ole tank to back up them Frames you know?

I'm thinking all the rules for Frames should easily apply to tanks/other vehicles, except melee weapons might be a bit......odd.

So yeah......thoughts?

There's a history in Mechaton of using the mech rules to build vehicles, infantry squads, giant mutant alien monstrosities (a lego-less friend of mine fielded a Tyrannid army from 40K which included some very large scary things), etc. They all use the same basic building apparatus, and sometimes there are a few special rules (although, I imagine, MFØ 001 will just be the basics).

Melee on vehicles is probably more drills and rams than swords and axes, though.

Only with infantry do i see it breaking down. Basically at this point EVERYTHING is treated like a mech. So you can build tanks, but they follow the same dice rules as everyone else. It can feel weird though treating a plate full of microfigs like a mech. I think Josh did hint at vehicle, infantry, and space battle rules being in testing/concept stages, but not at all with the first book.

I did this baby up using MFZ rules, and it's very tank-ish.

I absolutely plan to use the MFZ rules for tanks and vehicles. It seems to me that they would fit with very little (if any) adjustment.

I hadn't really considered infantry, but I don-t why that couldn't work with some minor adjustments.

One thing that immediately occurred to me after looking over the basic mechanic is that you could have "weak" units that had one white die as a base, or "large" ones that had three.

It seems pretty adaptable.

Sometimes I field a plate with 3 or 4 little infantry dudes on it, statted up as a mech.

It's obvious what we need to support.

OGRE.

Is there enough interest in tanks & vehicles to set up a sub forum for them?

I'm tempted just to see what people will come up with!

Maybe once the MFZ rules are out? it's in a similar situation to custom rules ATM.

I'd say just expand the "Forge" to include all creations for MFZ.

Well, maybe it's just the OCD in me, but I'd still like to see it sorted a bit, so we could have it go maybe something like this?

I suppose you could even throw in an Infantry subforum as well if there was enough demand for it. And honestly, I think a setup with more specific areas will be needed as the community grows, sure right now its only 62 strong, the Kickstarter has just shy of 1750 backers, and while they won't all pop up here, some will, and over time more and more will, and I think we'll see a fairly big boom once the new Rules are out and people start having questions and all that.
Anyways, those are my thoughts on the matter, I will copy paste this into the other thread too, as it better fits down there anyways.

Sometimes we've used a plate with dudes on as a "system" attached to a mech unit. Say, tech support (spotting) or infantry (direct fire) guys. Works well.

I've got a lot of infantry units going on. Even built a skeleton army using the Mechaton rules shortly before I discovered the new edition. I'll start a Frames thread in a bit.
