In the LEGO Closet?

So how many of you guys are openly LEGO enthusiasts?

Personally I am deep in the closet. I dont talk about it buddies at work (none of them are table top gamers) or any of the folks I do yoga with, I cringe at the idea of explaining the whole thing to a room full of spandex clad hottie pacifist vegetarians.

Am I just being stupid about being a bit embarrassed by my obsession with LEGO Mecha? At this point I shamelessly use my son as an excuse, and then only when accidently outed for one reason or another... Heck I don't even want to explain my historical mini gaming to the uninitiated.

Not in the slightest. Like any activity I do, I won't force people to sit and listen to me harp on about it. But, I'm not going to hide it away as if it is something weird. It's a hobby that involves creativity and skill as well as being fun and relaxing. Amongst my colleagues, there are many who bemoan the fact that they got rid of all the Lego they had as kids.

I don't hide it, but I don't broadcast it either.

Also, I think the insecurities we feel are tied more to what we build with LEGO rather than the LEGO itself.

We all know the stereotypes for people who like Sci-Fi and such you know?

Among TFOLs/AFOLs it's cool because we are Tied together by LEGO, not as much by the theme of what we build IMO.

I dunno, makes sense to me! xD

It just doesn't come up, for me. I've got enough other stuff going on that it's usually the least interesting potential conversation I could be having. So... not so much closeted as, there's never been a reason to encloset?

Of course, family and friends have been following the Kickstarter, so I've certainly had a lot of positive reinforcement lately.

Yeah I figured it was just my "issue". Just wanted to check in and see how others felt about it.

I guess when I think about it I can't even imagine how the conversation would start without an artificial start on my part, and so long as I having fun with it (and I definately am): why worry about it? Kind of like there is no right answer about what food or music you are into I guess.

I'm also in the not-hidden, but not-overt crowd.

I have a few LEGO creations on my desk at work, and the folks there (and at home) know I do freelance RPG writing and game design in my spare time, but it just doesn't come up that often with all the other stuff going on!

Whenever the topic of Lego comes up, most people around me either have fond childhood memories or are flabbergasted by the creativity it breeds. I have yet to see negative reactions. The only people that get looked at sideways are people that build entire Lego cities for Lego trains in their houses, occupying entire rooms. People seem to think that that's creepy. It's pretty close to model train fans anyways. I'd be delighted to just play MF0 in such a city, treating the MF as power armor instead of towering Mecha.

I keep a couple of my MFZ models on my desk at work, but
mostly my coworkers and I have other hobbies we enjoy together. Outside of work I have friends who I enjoy a variety of hobbies with, including building with Lego blocks. It never would have occured to me to think of this hobby as one that would have to be concealed from friends or family.

I'm certainly more open about MF0 than I am about Warhammer 40k (seeing as LEGO is quite a bit more widespread than plastic soldier-mans). As someone who glues and paints little toy soldiers to play with, explaining to a friend or coworker that I play a game with LEGO is significantly less awkward than explaining that I play a game that's an evolved form of sci-fi D&D.

I suppose it's kind of a different perspective than most people though, especially for anyone who doesn't have prior experience with tabletop wargames.

Anyway, that's just my 2 cents.
