New banner text?

Postby CrimsonKMR » Wed May 16, 2012 9:26 pm

Hi guys -

I saw the new banner image/text (the big red and black letters...)

Did that bork the formatting? The index/forum tree is now half on the right side of my screen, and half on the left...

or is it just me? XD

Yeah it's (I think) because of the transparency in the PNG of the banner. I've PM'd schoon to fix up the formatting and probably remove the header tiled image which while cool, really messes with the banner's readability.

I think the header art is cool; just don't tile it. Align/float it right, behind the Search field (or maybe padded out from the right enough so that the search box doesn't overlap the mech and runs above the head of the microfigs).

I'd also go ahead and put a white shadow (no offset, minimal feathering, minimal number of pixels) behind the red and black text, and a black one behind the white text, so that it will stand out against nearly any background (i.e., for reuse elsewhere, even if the header art is blown away).

[These are all formatting opinions; I would make other aesthetic changes to the text, like thickening it slightly so that it could be subtly beveled, massaging the kerning for a more pleasing balance between the narrow glyphs of "MOBILE" and wider ones of "HANGAR"... stuff like that. But I'm not trying to change your groove; just make the groove work reasonably well. ;) ]

The white shadow on the banner is a good idea, I'll put that in and email schoon the new version of it. As for the white text, you can't put a shadow behind that as it's just text.

Well I haven't seen the option to add a shadow to regular text in the phpBB config of the boards I've administered in the past but I admit I could be wrong.

I usually get rid of the header text in favour of a decent banner anyway.

Edit (or create) the CSS for the "site-description" DIV's H1 and P tags to add the "text-shadow" property.

Might have to FTP down the CSS file and FTP it back up, but that's trivial for an admin.
