Non-sentient combatants...possibly...

Postby Foghammer » Mon Apr 01, 2013 4:28 pm

So... I know that non-sentient beings attacking en masse, in formations, or with purpose is a no-no as far as MFZ goes, and that's totally understandable. I have set out to create a way to enhance long-term [campaign-style] gameplay (and possibly even make the game playable solo without feeling like you're totally playing against yourself). I hope the results are well received.

The idea is that "alien apex predators" can sometimes pose a threat to mobile frames if they wander too closely to the creature's territory. The number of predators included on the battlefield should be determined before play begins, and they should be placed on the board while cover is being placed, but none within direct fire range of any player's assets (unless that player consents). This could complicate battlefield layout, but it hasn't been playtested yet. I've lost my gaming group due to a change of living arrangements so I'm hoping someone here can try this out...

Anyway, these predators are treated as frames for all intents and purposes; they are assigned "systems" and always take last initiative. They always advance on and/or attack the nearest frame, taking the shortest route possible (in the case of a tie, the predator continues attacking the last frame/ it advanced on or attacked; if this is a tie, roll for it like good sports). Attacks by predators are handled as normal. When a predator attacks and deals damage however, the player does not choose which system is destroyed. Each predator has a predetermined order in which it destroys systems. For example, a Martian Scorpion's acid spray always manages to do away with its prey's armor first (which helps aid in digestion), weapons next, then movement systems, and finally, once a frame is pinned, the spot systems are ripped out as the creature attempts to find something edible in the machine.

When attacking predators, unlike attacking other frames, the attacker is allowed to determine which of the creature's "systems" are lost first. After losing three systems, a predator will attempt to flee outside of the battlefield (again taking the shortest route possible). Once a predator reaches the edge of the playing area or loses all of its "systems," it is removed from play.

Example:
Martian Scorpion
Acidic spray tail: d6Rd d6Rd
Hardened carapace: d6B
Multi-legged: d6G
Damage Priority: d6B Armor, d6Ra d6Rd d6Rh Weapon, d6G Movement, d6Y Spot.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Death threats?

EDIT: I just had this thought of a group of Ijad hopping onto these creatures at the cost of their own mobile frames and taking them over. Totally broken for gameplay, but intriguing.

Maybe a picture will help!

Behold, the Martian Scorpion (working title)! This has actually existed since the idea came about, but I just now got the picture taken and uploaded.

In this setting, there is certainly something to be said for accounting for hostile wildlife. I can imagine MFZ campaigns where you have to fend off x-amount of creatures before transport arrives to cart you away.
How about extra initiative gains for killing creatures in battle, before they choose to run away?
I'd like to some possibility of hundreds of swarms of spiders being fended off by five Mobile Frame's, who are making what might be their last stand. . .

Yeah it would be in terms of points gain similar to when you capture a station. Not sure what the right amount to balance it would be though.

Yeah that makes more sense. Instead of being outright attacked by the creatures, they are defending their territory. How about giving each one a defensive perimeter which would be placed near a station. Creatures wouldn't attack anything outside of the station except for any frame that shot at them. They would then chase and attack it for three turn before returning to their territory, unless killed first.

Yeah pretty much that. Shoot it and it chases you down. Come inside its territory and it attacks.
Just trying to add some more varied battle options.

This can just work for NPC frames in general if you edit it slightly. Good job!
