Musical Frame Zero: Theme/Mood Music

Postby Shades_Corvid » Mon Dec 19, 2016 12:18 pm

This is inspired by talks on the Discord Channel Mobile Frame Zero: University. What do you think would make good theme music for MF0:RA and/or Intercept Orbit? What about the factions your your own squad?

Is there music you like to play or would be good to set the mood for one of the games?

One of my personal favorite soundtracks that involves giant robots fighting is the title song for an old PC game called "One Must Fall: 2097". It's an older arena robot fighting game that was actually the first mecha game I ever played before I started getting into Battletech/MechWarrior. I tend to have this playing on my phone/mp3 player at some point during a match of MF0

Here's a YouTube link for the theme if anyone is interested, which I do not own, sadly. Hope you enjoy.

Edit: [Casts Raise Thread]

Soren once shared that he thought Digital Droo should do the official MFZ soundtrack (iirc the original context). Droo's Active Lancer soundtrack was cited as the primary reason. I agree, and I bought the album after listening to it. Not every song is so evocative, but it was worth it for the ones that were. It became my default building music for a long time.

I just collated a whole heap of Michael McCann's ambient dystopian synth onto my iPod for theme music at the Demo I'll be hosting at ettincon next month.

Greg Strom switched me on to him after sourcing the Intro/Outro for the Transit gate podcast.

It has been asked before!

Personally I recommend the soundtrack to Homeworld, and its spiritual successor Strike Suit Zero. They are suitably exotic and spacey sounding without being obtrusive.

I always have to plug Ratatat too, they've got a novel style perfect for background noise.

The soundtrack from the new BattleTech PC game seems to fit pretty well. Just the right mix of hope, desperation, high-tech and low-tech, especially in the main theme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjS7xfX ... 4HECPKusy3

Otherwise, pretty much any of the Gundam series' soundtracks can work pretty well depending on the mood you're going for. Which is one of the great things about MFZ, it can have just about any "feel" to it that you want it to, all depending on the story you want to tell and your actions as a player.
For over-the-top and/or silly/dramatic games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws3kY2LNPbM (Lots of d6Rh -using frames advised, if not downright necessary.)
For more serious battles that still have an element of heroism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b40mZVnQCTs
For games that are even more serious, to the point of being downright gritty: !https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1zJKECM_0s (See advice for G Gundam)
For tense covert-ops type battles, or intrigue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuLLRdsGNJo (Especially useful if one side has swarms and the other has a few maxed-out frames.)
For when the fates of interstellar nations are hanging by a thread: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKCCNMyKNJc
For that first moment when a frame launches in a story, or for "zooming out" and surveying the battlefield and reflecting on the cost of victory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJNMfDi ... 6EF669F49C
And for general purposes/use as a theme song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-0_s2_QR8o

And those are just the ones I think of off the top of my head!
