Capital Ships: Dragoon-class Cruiser

Postby Voldeblade » Mon Mar 25, 2019 8:18 am

At the time of their creation, the Dragoon-class cruisers of the Chandaran Coalition were the largest military vessels in the Chandaran reach. Built around two sets of mass drivers, similar to those mounted on the older Damselfly frigates, the Dragoon cruisers made for fearsome heavy gunships, proving adept at spearheading assaults and with its array of remote point-defense turrets it also came into its own blunting enemy mobile frame attacks. While later designs were built around the capability to carry mobile frames, which the stock Dragoon ships are incapable of doing, many veteran Chandaran naval officers still seem to prefer the use of the reliable, if somewhat dated, cruisers as their flagships. At this time its is unclear how many of theDragoon-class cruisers initially built are still in service. However, reportedly some are being converted into system defense ships and mobile frame carriers as newer designs emerge to supplant the aging Dragoons.

Nice simple design and very common parts friendly. I like it, well done!

I second that!

This can be a killer "budget cruiser", I wonder how it would look like with different systems attached!

Yeah, my parts selection IRL is pretty limited to older stuff, so I'm not as familiar with the more unusual elements and their uses.

Here's a later iteration of the Dragoon class of cruisers, designated the Dragoon II; this variant is notable for adding the ability to carry a squadron of mobile frames into battle, as well as additional forward armor plating on the hull. Forgoing close-ranged weaponry, the Dragoon II cruisers usually mount two support-ranged weapon systems--in the case of this ship, two support-class mass drivers, calibrated for long-range firing but suffering from reduced accuracy against faster-moving targets or at close quarters. The overall philosophy of the design is that the attached frame squadron will escort the ship and protect it from enemies that attempt to close inside its minimum range, while the cruiser provides the frames with fuel, repairs, and much-needed reach to eliminate the need to send the frames after more distant targets, risking their isolation.

Really great! I might need to brick one out and see how they feel!
