Master Solar Union/Federation Fleet Database

Postby The Hydromancer » Thu Feb 07, 2019 9:00 pm

So its probably time to add a Intercept Orbit equivalent to the Master Chubdam Database with the fleet growing as it is. I don't have a catchy name for the fleet yet, but I'm open to suggestions.

The Salamis is a frigate sized at 12 studs long, and comes with 6 main guns (3 forward mounted and 3 rear mounted), 2 missile a launcher pods, 6 point defense guns, and comm antennas mounted on secondary bridges mounted on the sides of the hull.

The Salamis class's lack of speed, ability to carry frames, and relative lack of 'punch' restrict it from independent operation. Instead the class usual acts as an escort for larger capital ships where multiple frigates working together can form effective screening forces for the more important task force leaders. While between the point defense, main guns, and long range missiles the Salamis is able to engage at all ranges of ship to ship combat, traditional naval doctrine usually reserves each ship in a force to a fixed engagement envelope. By fulfilling a predetermined role the ship contributes to the overall engagement strategy more effectively than the limited crew might otherwise.

ImageSalamis Class by The Hydromancer, on Flickr

The Salamis Kai is a modified version of the lackluster but dependable Salamis class, and as such is also a frigate sized at 12 studs long. In order to bring the Salamis class into the modern era of frame focused combat, the Kai's forward bow has been modified to fit a hangar bay with a vertical lift elevator and topside launch catapult, necessitating the removal of one of the main guns. In order to increase the weight of the attacks the Kai could throw in medium range anti ship bombardments, the secondary bridges were replaced with duel main gun mounts, effectively increasing the total number of barrels to 9. Between the additional weapons and the widening of the bow for the hangar which also necessitated the removal of the missile pods, the Kai's role in combat is more definitely defined to medium range where it might better support the frames it launches. Finally, boosters were added to the engine to improve its overall speed.

The Kai represents a focused effort to improve the Salamis overall, but doesn't quite replace the original's role in the navy. Instead, the Kai is mostly likely to be seen serving as the lead vessel in a small task force comprised of several additional normal Salamis class ships operating in areas deemed less important or dangerous enough to warrant a true capital ship. Alternatively a ship or two of the Kai class may be attached to an existing task force to supplement the frame squads available for duty.

The Magellan Class is a battleship from days gone by. At 16 studs long the class is a considered that of a capital ship, but lacks the frame hangars and launch catapults that modern capital ships are traditionally known for. Instead the Magellans harken from an era of 'big guns diplomacy' where it was expected that the threat of a barrage from five twinned main gun mounts (five being the largest number of its seven gun mounts the Magellan could bring to bear in a broadside or chase configuration) would be enough to cow an opposing ship or space colony. The Magellan was intended to serve as the heart of a task force providing overwhelming firepower, while several Salamis class frigates provided protection and/or contributed their own firepower. As dedicated task force command ships the Magellans were also outfitted with extensive communication and targeting arrays to better coordinate fire control across the task force.

With the advent of mobile frames capable of dominating the tides of warfare, the Magellan class has suffered significant setbacks due to their low emphasis on point defense, slow cruising speed, and lack of ability to act as carriers. Regulated to rear echelon positions supplementing fixed position defenses more often than not, the Magellan is still rarely seen leading task forces comprised of Salamis Kai frigates that can provide the much needed mobile frame squadrons that the capital ship can't provide itself. In the even rarer case of the few large scale fleet on fleet actions that have so far taken place during the Solar Union's attempt to return law and order to the stars, multiple Magellans have actually been observed subordinated to modern capital ships spaced evenly through out the wall of battle to help extend the range of the command and control of the flagship in addition to contributing their own firepower to the fleet action.

Still, the Magellan class has found itself marginalized and pushed to the side by modern capital ships better equipped and even frigates that can perform their role with a fraction of the crew. Interestingly the Magellan is more likely to turn up in more questionable hands as of late, as more desperate forces acquire the ships through legal purchase as the SU sheds the class or raiding mothballed fleets keeping station in out the way and poorly defended locations. Whatever the case, opposing ships would do well to remember that while the class may lack modern sensibilities when it comes to naval design, its broadsides can still cause catastrophic damage to unwary foes that allow a Magellan to close for an alpha strike.

I even left off the point defense guns this time too :P The Magellans were the definition of battleships.

---

The Pegasus Class capital ship is the epitome of the modern mobile frame carrier. 15 by 15 studs, this class jams everything a first tier naval captain could dream of into one elegant package; two hangars with sheltered launch catapults, eight missile tubes, two dual barreled compressed particle cannons, a state of the art command bridge with the latest in electronic warfare protection, two clusters of four powerful engines, and the ability to operate at the bottom of a gravity well due to its advanced anti-grav skirt system that's as expensive to maintain as it is to produce.

The Pegasus class operates as the core of a carrier strike group, often leading sizable groups of frigates and even occasionally other capital ships against the Solar Union's most grave challenges. If there is a system that must absolutely be retaken at all costs, or an enemy fleet forming to strike at a crucial transit gate, nothing draws the line in the proverbial sand like deploying one of the pride and joys of the Solar Union naval forces. Most often seen flying the colors of a Terran Expeditionary Marine flag admiral, rumors suggest that lone Pegasi are known to transit dangerously close to critical facilities for surgical mobile frame strikes with frightening effect. Shadowy and possibly illegal trials for prototype mobile frames, or the actions of an independent and desperate ship trapped behind enemy lines? The distinction, if even these rumors are true, often little comfort to the hulks of enemy ships and mobile frames surely left in it's wake.

For when elite mobile frames are assigned to a Pegasus, woe be unto any who dare cross under the shadow of its wings.

Chubdam, Chubtank, Chubcannon, Chubdam Mass Production, and Moai sized for Intercept Orbit mobile frame squads. Although it has the least reason to be in space, the Chubtank is probably my fav out of the line up.

I think the Federation from the One Year War is now well represented in both space and on the ground for both RA and IO. I should move on to the navy for Zeon sometime.

Based on the O'Neil cylinder space stations designed by physicist Gerard K. O'Neill and featured in Mobile Suit Gundam.

This High Value Asset is 12 studs long and while its not exactly to scale with the ships in Intercept Orbit, the mobile frames aren't exactly to scale either. I had to take some liberties with the agriculture ring and greatly shrink it down from the source material, but maybe a friendly fleet will show up to provide the hungry colonists with some peaches and wholecorn.

I must say, these designs are great, indeed. I'll say that the Cylinder did caught me totally off-guard. Amazing design.

Any idea about the systems per vessel, by the way?

The O'Neill cylinder almost drove me to tears of joy, beautiful design!

About the IO frames, those are great, but I'm not feeling those 1x2 feet, I would use 1x1 myself.

I like the mini Gundams as well, and like VitorFaria, the jumpers and 1x2 plates for feet give them a strange 'stompy' look. Maybe even try some padlocks as the feet to give the impression of boots?

Yea I think you two had a point. Gonna run with 1 x 1 plate feet instead, thanks for the suggestions!

The La Vie en Rose, a mobile repair dock, based on the space station of the same name from Gundam Zeta. This high value asset could be used for unique battles where the controller have it roll to repair ships within dogfight range of it. Or as a normal HVA, no pressure.

Fragate? Frime? Mobile Frame Armor? Its the Neo Zeong from Gundam Unicorn! Sized as a frigate because, let's be honest, its too big even for a whole mobile frame squad. Thinking defense system for the I-Field and double assault range systems for its six giant arm cannons.

Dendrobium mobile armor, sized to a frigate like the Neo Zeong. This is one folks have been asking for since I did the first two Stardust Memory Chubdams waaaay back when, but something I was afraid to tackle. Honestly I didn't even know where to start! But recently working on all the IO ships and finally the Neo Zeong gave me the confidence to try. Maybe one day I'll be insane enough to try to scale it for a Chubdam, but for now I'm pretty happy with the current result.
