Scythian Strike Cruiser -- now a full fleet, with one HVA

Postby Minion » Sun May 01, 2016 4:13 pm

My first attempt at building a ship for IO. Ignore the base -- it's big enough for a capital ship, but I'm weirdly short on large(ish) plates.

ImageImage

What I had in mind while I was putting it together was these ships you're starting to see in SF movies, with vanes that move to make the ship sleeker, or wider. Maybe Jupiter Ascending was what I was thinking? Or Guardians of the Galaxy? I'm not sure. It's built almost entirely from this kit, with just extra pieces.

(I posted this already on rpg.net, so if you follow Mantisking's thread over there you'll already have seen it!)

That is fantastic. I love the angles and the offset of the overlapping plates.

That's a very nice looking ship, great use of CCBS ball joints.

1000% agree! I love seeing good uses of the CCBS parts in our scale. The angles on this ship are great! Phenomenal first effort.

The overlapping plates are great indeed.

"Red creatures" is a nice set, you did a nice job using it with the scale's constraints.

Very cool! At first glance, I thought the front vanes were claws to grab asteroids or other ships.

As I wrote on the RPG.net forums, I love this design. I'm really tempted to copy it.

Thanks for the kind words, folks! Can't believe it has taken me almost a month to say that. I haven't been completely idle, though: I now have a carrier to join the Scythian. At least for now, I'm calling it the Kurgan:

And it turned into a fleet.

A couple of frigates with some big guns:

A light carrier:

And the whole shebang:

Now I just need to figure out some HVAs. A different colour scheme, I think.

This is growing into a really great looking fleet.

I'm loving those frames! Are they based on a previously built RA model or it's just something you did on the fly?

Thanks, VF!

The frames aren't based on anything I've previously built, nope. I just tried to make shapes that looked like they would fit with the rest of the fleet. Slopes and angles. Now you've got me wondering what they would look like in RA scale...

You built a Reuben by Lorc recently, got me wondering if those were space-custom versions of it! :D

I really like the first ship. it has a Mass Effect Reaper vibe.

It hadn't occurred to me, but it kinda works for pretty much any setting with a group called "Reapers".

Also, lovin' the microframes, as always.

This is a nice-looking fleet! I like that the ships are different enough that they're easy to tell apart, but the movable wings and other shared details tie them together and make the fleet look cohesive.

Thanks everybody! I confess I've never played any of the Mass Effect games. I keep meaning to -- setting-wise, they're exactly the sort of thing that I would like, but my video game attention span usually doesn't last much longer than 10 or 12 hours.

Anyone have any criticisms or suggestions or advice? They'd be very welcome!

I like this design more and more each time I see it. I'm having a little trouble figuring out the core of the cruiser. Would you mind posting a breakdown?

Cheers Rphilo, Grass4hopper! Grass4hopper, I had a heck of a time figuring out how to take good breakdown photos -- never tried before -- so I ended up just doing a step by step, below. Hope it helps!
