Oh snap! I love that Hammerhead design, Cake. Really slick. The only thing that bugs me is the single exposed stud in front of the first dorsal-mounted cannon. I'd want to cover that with a jumper plate.

I could see a larger, capital ship version of that build with multiple row of torpedo tubes on the front. Or something with a wider head and all sorts of greebling on the back of the hood for a sensor ship, or ECM defense bits.

I agree with that exposed stud - currently working on an improvement, and it's already gotten wider, at this rate I'll have a Dreadnought sized craft, not a Cruiser :shock:

Love playing with design, it's soooo versatile, and soooo easy to modify :D

I really like the core of the Nimbus hull, very versatile. I wanted to have a couple light escorts to go with my big cruiser; they ended up getting much broader and flatter.

The Nimbus is a great core to work off of. I wouldn't be surprised to see lots of people building these for IO.

As I said in the group shot post, I love the use of the mudguards, I also like the "dolphin fin" exhaust. The grey really makes the look military, too. Have you considered a splash of color somewhere though? Just to draw the eye?

I was having some fun along the same lines. It's just a great core to start with.

:D :D :D I think it fits being nearly all white. Glad to have helped with a name.

I've been busy with this one the last few weeks, which is a polite way of saying I went a little crazy and now have 10 of them. I could go on and on about how versatile a platform it is, but I'll let the pictures do that instead

I like these variations, but I think the design loses something when you put binoculars up near the front—because fishface. That aside, they're all nice examples.

Now I can't unsee the fish face... Thanks, Blorf.

However, I'm really digging the orange, green, and two supplemental dark red ones. Nice work, FragsturBait.

And... NECROTHREAD!

ORT-09X DDG and ORT-07 DD by Christopher Stone-Bush, on Flickr
It's been a long while since I did anything with my 'NASA Industrial' fleet. Real life has a nasty way of interfering with the time I would otherwise spend on my hobbies. But things have calmed down and I'm back to building more IO ships. Yeah!

Above are the new MkIII Nimbus destroyers; the ORT-09X Nimbus DDG (a guided missile destroyer) on the left and the ORT-07 Nimbus DD (destroyer) on the right. The change from MkII to MkIII was pretty minor; I simply swapped the top and bottom hulls. The white, curved top brick is now the prow (like the Cumulus class cruisers), giving the ship a more "beluga-like" appearance. I still have to update the ORT-08 Nimbus DD, but in the meantime...

ORT-10 Nimbus MkIII DDR (Radar-Picket) by Christopher Stone-Bush, on Flickr

The ORT-10 Nimbus DDR (radar picket destroyer). Nicknamed ‘Bettas’ due to their distinctive pectoral fin antenna arrays, ORT-10s function as a radar-picket ships. Their increased sensor capabilities allow them to “illuminate” enemy targets at long ranges, helping the heavier armed ships maximize their damage potential.

I played around with the positioning of those minifig harpoon guns a lot until I was satisfied. The whole idea came about because I finally got a pair of the harpoons in an underwater themed City I bought recently. I've wanted some of those for a long, long time.I'm not sure how useful it is in game, but I think this ship is a double-spotter.

Those ships killed my "IO Dark Age" pretty hard!

Made three (two of the purple one) in a few minutes, almost like a crazy possessed person!

God I wish I knew about this thread when I first started IO, It would have saved me a ton of grief when I was trying to build IO ships. However, now that I know of it's exsistance, I must say that eh central core of the Nimbus is extemly versatile. I like that. All you need to do to change the ships role is by replacing the side plates which makes customizing easier and fun! And because of this, like VitorFaria before me, I too build several like a crazed maniac!

ImageYellow Assault Nimbus MkV
YELLOW: d6Rd d6Rd d8Rd Dual Assualt Range Torpedo Bays, d6G Frigate Engines

ImageBrown Light Carrier Nimbus MkV
BROWN: d6Rh d6Rh Point Defense Turret, 2Kd6 Dual Frame Catapults, d6G Frigate Engines

ImageTan Cargo Nimbus MkV
TAN: d6G Frigate Engines. No other systems, will most likely be used as a Cargo HVA for the Grand Dustashim!

ImageRed Scout Nimbus MkV
RED: d6Rh d6Rh Point Defense Turret, d6Y d6Y Advanced Scan Radars, d6G Frigate Engines

They may not be as good as some of the others posted here, but I hope you enjoyed!
EDIT: Fixed loadout on Yellow. Movement systems are not allowed on IO ships except for the Free d6G for being Frigate class

Those look great, Artasid! Great idea with those hinging torpedo bays!

I'm not sure if ships can actually carry movement systems, thou.

Hmm, I thought they could. I'll have to double check. Thank you for pointing this out.

The only Movement system allowed is the d6G for being a Frigate.

Oh heck yeah. Those ships are all fricking awesome @VitorFaria and @Artasid. As you said, I'm really happy with how versatile the core of the Nimbus is. It is rad to see all the cool variant builds people are coming up with.

I've posted these other places, but I somehow neglected to put them up here in the Hangar. I put together a small ORT fleet a few weeks ago for a game of Intercept Orbit that unfortunately never happened. As it was going to be a demo-ish game (and honestly, it'd be my first IO game), the fleet is only 5 TAs and 1 HVA.

Image
A shot of the (small) ORT fleet together to show size comparisons.

From left to right: a Light Cruiser, a Capital Carrier, a Heavy Destroyer, and a Science Vessel HVA.

Image
////DESIGNATION: ORT CUMULONIMBUS
////ROLE: CAPITAL TRANSPORT
////SYSTEMS LOADOUT:
>>SYSTEM 01: POINT DEFENSE WEAPON
>>SYSTEM 02: COMMS
>>SYSTEM 03: FRAME CATAPULT
>>SYSTEM 04: FRAME CATAPULT
Slow, fragile, and lacking long-range weaponry, the ORT Cumulonimbus is a capital ship dedicated almost entirely to mobile frame transport and maintenance.

Image
////DESIGNATION: ORT CUMULOSTRATUS CCG
////ROLE: LIGHT CRUISER
////SYSTEMS LOADOUT:
>>SYSTEM 01: ASSAULT RANGE WEAPON
>>SYSTEM 02: DEFENSE
>>SYSTEM 03: DEFENSE
>>SYSTEM XX: MOVEMENT
Quick, maneuverable, heavily armored but lightly armed, the Cumulostratus' main role is defense. Packed with ECM/ECCM systems and electronic chaff dispensers, it can reduce the impact of enemy fire on nearby ships.

Image
////DESIGNATION: ORT NIMBOSTRATUS DDG
////ROLE: HEAVY DESTROYER
////SYSTEMS LOADOUT:
>>SYSTEM 01: ASSAULT RANGE WEAPON
>>SYSTEM 02: SUPPORT RANGE WEAPON
>>SYSTEM 03: COMMS
>>SYSTEM XX: MOVEMENT
Capable of laying down a lot of firepower, the Nimbostratus are lightly armored and rely on their maneuverability (or other ships) to avoid damage.

Image
////DESIGNATION: ORT NOCTILUCENT HVA
////ROLE: HIGH VALUE ASSET
////SYSTEMS LOADOUT:
>>SYSTEM XX: MOVEMENT
Unarmed and unarmored, HVAs (high value assets) are a tactical liability during a battle. Noctilucent science vessels need an escort of frigates and capital ships to avoid capture.

Too bad there don't seem to be Intercept Orbit system emojis.

@HyveMynd I love these! Not only is your formatting great (Which really sells me on your builds with all the cool text), but the builds are cohesive and look great! I don't know how else to put it, but these all really look like massive spaceships and have a very cool look to them.
