SC 0231
Location: Erebus
Unit: Erebus First and Only (TEM) Onboard Recording Device
Classified

The rain pounded on the top of Dmitri's Chub. In front of him a trackless plain of midnight soil and grassy fields; behind the eerily glowing fauna of the great Erebus rain forest.

Dmitri sighed at the dark clouded skies. He hadn't seen the sun in twelve Terran years.

Erebus was a scientific anomaly; a planet that by all accounts should've been frozen solid. The geothermal activity was the only thing keeping Erebus from ending up cold as space. The endless rainstorm and bioluminescent fauna kept Erebus a popular destination for researchers.

But Dmitri didn't sign up for the TEMs for pretty scenery and scientific mysteries...

"Sadowski, move on up!"

Dmitri eased his Chub through the high grass. This was their fifth search this cycle. Colonists were vanishing; sometimes as many as twenty at a time. Though not considered unusual on such a back world, the Thanatos Corporation wanted to make sure their employees were safe...

They wanted to make sure insurrectionists were not involved. Thanatos had apparently been receiving threats for a long time from Ace, a local group of firebrands. Erebus was too important of a recruitment world for firebrands.

Dmitri's phasesword hissed as the rain continued. The small mining camp was ahead. He checked his Chub's sensors and saw only his squad mates forming a wedge. He couldn't explain it; he was uneasy.

"Sarge, don't you think this is all a goose chase? I say hutch it!"

Dmitri could hear the disdain of PFC Riley. Riley's Commisar was barely tall enough to be seen over the tall grass.

"Private, how many times do I have to tell you, we don't get paid by the hutching hour!"

Sgt Piper was exhausting his little patience. He was ready to be back at Nova Moscow. The mining camp was four hours away by transport.

Dmitri checked through the Chub's optics. Two more minutes until they searched the camp. He double checked the location: three mining barracks made of cloth, a main mine shaft elevator and a command and control center.

Dmitri snapped out of autopilot when he heard the sound of metal slicing metal. He double checked his sensors, but static filled every screen.

"Sarge, what was that?" Riley's voice had risen two full octaves.

Dmitri's voice sounded small in his own ears, "Any contacts?"

Off in the distance, he could hear the staccato of the Commissars opening fire. Their rifles were in full auto. Dmitri reacted and spun his Chub and phasesword in a full arc. The grass fell away in front and behind him.

"Sarge, what are the-"

"Riley can it! These can't be Ace, they-"

The rest of Piper's words were cut off by a bloodcurdling scream. Dmitri checked his optics again... There was no sign of the Sarge... Riley's Commisar disappeared beneath the sea of grass. Dmitri started towards Riley; together they might have a shot.

He found the Commissar covered in cylinder fluid. The cockpit's front viewport was shattered, and it was missing its arms. Riley was not complaining outside. He was nowhere to be found.

"Mining Camp Delta, this is the TEMs. Request a group of frames for an emergency search party!" Dmitri was practically shouting; he had to find them.

Silence... Not even a radio call came to him. Dmitri quickly turned to the mining camp and sprinted his Chub forwards. There had to be an explanation! He closed the rest of the distance in two heartbeats.

The camp was dark; not a single frame was on.

Dmitri could only stare... Everyone was gone.

Due to my computer being on the mend, I decided to try my hand at a little fan fiction. I wanted to include pics, but I suppose this'll have to do.

C&C always welcome!

Nice piece of writing, NinjaLegendDoom; works nicely as either as a one-off or an intro to something larger.

A couple queries from a MFZ fluff/crunch nut mostly in regards to the timeline of your tale:
Is this story based in the Solar Calendar setting? If so then you should be aware that the Free Colonies movement really only took off after the Battle Quall in SC 0240 so it seems unlikely the TEMs would be using the term in 0231; I would suggest trading out "Free Colonies" for a general term like insurrectionists or perhaps inventing an Erebus specific rebel element.

Regarding Dmitri's thought about not seeing "the sun in twelve Terran years" is this meant as general comment on how long he's been away from the Sol system or a specific comment about how long they've been stationed on Erebus? If it's the latter (and based in the Solar Calendar setting), then that's seems like an unusually long deployment for a "war fighting" force; TEMs are essentially the special forces of the SU and are a very mission orientated (mostly kicking butt and taking names) but aren't meant for occupying territory or peace keeping efforts (that's what the UMFL are for). I don't think there is anything wrong with the idea of TEMs being on a search and rescue/destroy mission, just the implied duration seems off.

Thank you! Yes, you don't want to go out around Erebus at night.

Thank you! I will edit the piece (it is meant to be Solar Calendar compliant). Erebus is a colonial mining world and also a recruitment and training world for the TEMs and UMFL but more on that later ;)

The timespan for twelve years is how long Dmitri has lived/trained on Erebus.

Cadet Aleksei Volkov was jarred awake by the slamming of the Control Tower door. Unconsciencely, he stood and saluted trying to hide his heavy red eyes from whatever noncom was coming to chew him out. His chair flew comically to the other side of his post.

"Sir!"

A small rodent-like Sgt Mack lazily returned his salute. His low, loud voice belied his size.

"At ease, Cadet."

It may have been the sleep still gnawing at Aleksei, but he could've sworn the Sarge sounded nervous. A quick glance in his direction confirmed that Mack was swaying unconcienciously, and his hands were shaking.

This made Aleksei feel even worse... Did they know he had been sleeping at his post for the last few nights? 0300 drills were taking their toll... No one could seem to get used to the eternal darkness plaguing this planet either.

"Cadet, I'm not here to talk about your sleeping habits. HQ's comms relay went down at 2154. We need to contact the First and Only."

Aleksei breathed easier... He had to be more careful where he napped, but at least he wouldn't have KP duty for the next ten cycles. He quickly pulled up the sensor data on the First and Only...

He could feel his heart sink through his duty boots.

"Hutch," was all the Sarge could utter.

Two of the frames were missing. Only the Chub marked "Sadowski" was left. A lone sentinel standing in an empty mining camp... The screen flickered for a moment and then died.

Aleksei started to press the controls, but the screen wouldn't reboot. The boot camp's lights all flickered. As Aleksei stared out the tower viewports, all the exterior lights died. The eerily glowing forest surrounding the camp provided the only illumination. The entire camp was bathed in an inhuman blue glow.

Aleksei turned towards the Sarge, as the screams started. The main barracks located below them must've been hit.

Sgt Mack had his sidearm pointed at the door. He glanced nervously back at Aleksei, and without a word ran through the door and jammed it shut.

Aleksei could only listen in terror at the report of the Sarge's sidearm...

And the awful screaming that followed...

Dmitri saw the swarm of hard suits coming... They trampled the rest of the tall grass making a beeline to him. The first to reach him used its thrusters, attempting to take his Chub's head off.

Dmitri concentrated on his controls, he had to time this perfectly. As the Imp reached its highest point, Dmitri hit the thrusters...

The Imp swung its laser pick and missed; It made a satisfying chrunch against Dmitri's kick.

Dmitri stared blankly at his inoperable sensors.... His heart was racing and he was sweating in spite of the climate control.

Where is everybody?

He knew he couldn't just stand here and wait for whatever took out Riley and the Sarge, but the camp somehow felt more forboding than the unseen horrors of the field. He had to do something to clear his mind.

He attempted to reset his sensors to no avail. He reached for the lever to power down...

A shadow darted past the corner of his eye!

Dmitri keyed his radio.

"Terran Expenditionary Marines!" His voice cracked, forcing him to take a moment. "Identify yourself!"

He glanced again on the sensors, and miraculously saw a faint signature next to the control center. He turned his Chub and saw a the hunched figure of a Hardsuit. It was one of the newer Imp models, reinforced in case of cave ins.

He sighed, relieved to see at least one of the miners... Perhaps the rest were on holiday? Dmitri quickly changed frequencies and clicked his mic.

The reaction was instantaneous; the Imp turned.

"..... Svar.... We... W...waited....."

Dmitri checked his comms... The Hardsuit was cutting in and out. The voice sounded gravelly, almost as if it was unfamiliar with standard.

His comms were green. His unease was growing by the minute.

"Unknown miner, state your intentions."

"..... M..must.... help, l....leav...e."

Lightning flashed, partially blinding Dmitri. By the time his eyes cleared, the imp was gone. The Lightning seemed to spark his sensors to life, showing an anthill of contacts.

His Chub turned, seemingly of its own accord back to the field.

The Imp swung its laser pick and missed; It made a satisfying crunch against Dmitri's kick. He had no time to watch it impact the nearest tree; sliding slowly to the ground. He was immediately engulfed in the swarm.

His phaseblade neatly bisected three of the Imps, but he knew it wouldn't be enough.

Alarms sounded; mining lasers impacted his front armor. One of the hardsuits used its drill to melt his pistol's barrel.

Dmitri knew he only had one chance... He had to get to the exfiltration point. He quickly triggered his thrusters. Out of the corner of his eye he saw an Imp carrying the missile pod from Sgt Piper's Commisar. He could only watch helplessly as it took aim...

It was too late.

WARNING!!!! SIGNAL INTERCEPTED

Aleksei laid curled in a ball in the floor, his tears now smears of salt across his face. He had laid here for what seemed an eternity, however he knew from his chrono that the screams had died down two hours ago.

Though he was sure the entire camp was dead, the enemy had made no sounds. These had to be professionals; the camp was overrun in a mere ten minutes. He had listened at the door for any hint of life, but couldn't hear anything. His friends were all gone... As were everyone he knew on this planet.

The forest continued to cast its light blue glow through the control tower window; the backup generators didn't kick start the lights. Aleksei was ready to give up.... He hadn't reacted fast enough to help the Sarge...

He had been asleep at his post and allowed this invasion to happen.

A light on the comms console interrupted his self pity. He sobbed dryly, thinking it was his imagination.

The light pulsed weakly red against the blue background. He couldn't deny the evidence that someone was trying to contact him.

He stretched his body slowly to a laying position; he was cramped from laying for so long. Slowly, as if he was rising from the dead, he stood.

He picked up the oversized headphones and pulled the mic forwards.

"TEM Foxtrot."

He attempted to sound casual, but knew his voice sounded raw.

"This is PFC Weber, Erebus UMFL, Shadow Company," a calm deep voice replied. "We were in the neighborhood and needed refueling."

Aleksei never thought he'd be happy to hear from the UMFL. Usually, (at least according to the Sarge) the TEMs were called in to clean up and rescue beleaguered UMFL forces. He was sure the Sarge would have been crying with joy had he been here...

Aleksei must've taken a beat too long...

"Foxtrot, are you Oscar Mike?"

He quickly responded, "Shadow Company, currently Foxtrot is overrun." He tried to think of any other details he could give; he couldn't keep the pleading tone from his voice.

Before Shadow Company could reply, Aleksei heard a scratching at the metal door. He turned and saw the door (triple grade Titanium) was starting to glow cherry red. He hadn't even heard footsteps approaching.

"Aw Hutch," his voice had become a high pitched whine, "They're coming! Shadow Company, please help!"

Aleksei peered around the Control tower for something, anything that he could use as a weapon. The blue light revealed nothing. The glow was quickly growing in intensity. His glancing caused his headphones to unplug. Over the speakers he heard PFC Weber calmly state, "Contact."

The glow turned into a hole large enough for an arm to reach through... This particular arm was covered in spikey midnight tattoos. Aleksei watched completely helpless as the hole grew. After the arm a head thrust through...

It's irises were black as night, the whites of the eyes looked red from pain. Those same tattoos spiked accrossed the cheeks and ended in points below the eyes. Surrounding his body was a slight black mist... It was the face of Sgt Mack as Aleksei had never seen him.

"S...sarge?"

The eyes had a hint of recognition. He seemed to be trying to communicate, but his voice did not follow his commands. It came out as a low slow groan.

".....R....rrrr.....un..."

Aleksei searched frantically for a way to escape, when his whole world exploded.

Safety glass sprayed from the now shattered control tower windows. Rain poured into the control room, sparking a small electrical fire. A black Commisar's arm reached through and the hand closed swiftly around Aleksei's waist. He was pulled gently through the now gaping hole.

The last sight of Aleksei's home was the door bending inwards and his former friends flooding through...

Fortunately, I had a small break from work and my computer is still on the fritz

I want to thank everyone who's read this far, I really thought my writing wasn't half as good as most of the other entries here. There is more to come when I have more time. FYI these are not zombies not any hive minded creature... You'll have to read on to learn more ;)

WARNING!!! TRANSMISSION INTERCEPTED

Dmitri felt time slow; each minute bracing himself for the sure impact. He could see in perfect clarity the Imps retreating from his Chub; the contrail from a freshly launched rocket. He senses seemed expanded as he could also hear the deadpan of the rain turning into hail pinging off his remaining armor.

Dmitri wasn't sure if he flailed his arms idly to protect his face, or if he intentionally moved his controls... However, his ruined pistol flew in a slight arc and impacted the rocket mid-flight. At first the world glowed an unnatural bright orange...

Then the shockwave impacted.

Dmitri lost what little control he had of his airborne frame. It flew out into the forest. He had no time to see the small hardsuits scattered by the shockwave, nor to see the rocket wielding Imp simply fall backwards like a domino. His Chub was taking impacts as hard as sustained fire from the trees. The branches scraped off the first layer of pain on his Chub's arms... He felt a sharp pull on his left side as his pistol wielding arm sheared cleanly through.

Dmitri's world jolted suddenly to a halt... His chub had impacted a great glowing tree. The tree stood its ground long enough for his stabilization systems to take control and right his Chub; it then fell gracefully to the ground.

He was still marveling at the fact he had survived when the pain hit him like a sledgehammer.

"Medical attention required," chirped a high pitched computerized voice. "Medical suite initiated!"

Dmitri felt his suit's arm tighten and then stiffen into a makeshift splint. His chestplate injected him with painkillers, but they seemed to have no effect. He must've bruised at least four ribs... Every breath brought a fresh wave of agony. Dmitri knew in the back of his mind that he had to move while the enemy was out of commission, but blacked out before he could gain the will to escape.

This isn't so bad, was his last thought before sweet relief.

The Rook

Postby NinjaLegendDoom » Sun Mar 27, 2016 9:46 pm

0231
Location: Erebus; Nova Moscow Research Center (Thanatos)
Unit: None (Local Recording Devices)
WARNING!!! DATA TAP DECTECTED!!!!

The "Raven" smiled sweetly to herself... Today would be the day that ACE (Anti-Corporate Entities) would rise! Today Thanatos Corp would be driven off their planet. She had worked undercover as Dr. Barb Klaus for far too long. The antiseptic white lights seemed to give her a ghostly glow as she hurried to her new corporate assignment. She had to control herself to keep from dancing, after all she did have an image to keep. She let the smile slide easily from her face... Her disguise had worked thus far, and she didn't want to risk losing the valuable intel she would distribute to the local populace.

The holographic Career board had shown her reassignment on clock-in... She would finally be joining the darker side of Thanatos Corp; The Experimental Warfare Department. For three long years she had worked in the medical department. She hadn't found any evidence there that the Company held any ill will. This was her last chance to expose the scum for what they were...

And more importantly what was happening to the local Erebus Soldiers. She had had doubts for a long time about the Solar Union... The news networks on Erebus seemed to always excuse the power outages ("Solar Flare activity," the powers that be claimed) and the disappearances (Local Wildlife on Training Courses)...

A bored and scarecrow-like scientist was waiting for her next to the offices. His I.D. tag read "Dr. James Concord". A thin and strained smile crossed his lips... He looked as though he hadn't slept for days.

"Welcome to your new home," he stated in a strangely deep voice. "If you follow me, you'll get to see all the latest and greatest technology."

Raven faked a nervous smile and follow him at a brusque pace through the automatic doors.

The first impression she got was caged animals at the zoo... Unlike the open spaces in the medical ward each pane of glass separated them from a hangar, Pilot and Frame. Each had a bay door to the outside. She momentarily wondered if she was in the right place...

Then she noticed the antenna attached to the backs of the pilots. All the pilots had a small invertebrate "blob" (if that was indeed the right term) Attached to the base of their necks.

"As you can see," the scientist was talking rapidly, as if he expected her to memorize every word, "These specimens called, 'Ijad' are symbiotic in nature. Erebus has a small colony near the south pole that volunteered forty hatchlings to bond with our soldiers."

Raven was shocked... So shocked she was not paying attention to what Dr. Concord was saying. Thanatos was working with these... Shroomies? The Raven had only seen Ijad venture into Nova Moscow on two occasions... Both of which seemed inconsequential. However, she knew that she was never comfortable around them. Most of the folks she met seemed to hate them... Especially those who were training in the multiple UMFL and TEM camps on Erebus. The Solar Union had to be blind to this research.

"... They seem to have improved the reflexes of each of our pilots," Dr. Concord seemed to be coming to something important. She made sure to keep her wits about her as he continued. The rows of tempered glass seemed to be tapering off to two last Hangars. One of which was empty with a large jagged hole in bay doors.

Dr. Concord turned abrubtly towards her. "This is where you come in... We have been trying to find a way to improve our soldiers abilities artificially. As you know most of the population here hates anything alien... Take a look in Bay Forty-Two, please."

The Raven looked through the last glass panel... A woman was standing alone inside the enclosure. Though it was lit with the same white lights, a shadow seemed to surround him. The Doctor pressed a button for communications with the room.

Raven had to bite the insides of her lips not to scream. The woman's irises were the purest black; her skin that was showing was covered in Jagged spikey black tattoos. Her face was almost normal, excepting the two spikes of black acrossed her cheeks pooling into her eyes.

"Meet Subject Two," Dr. Concord stated dryly. "We attempted to use nanobots for our troops to be able to communicate instantaneously with the Frames."

"Where is her Frame?" Raven asked, almost startled at hearing her own voice.

The Doctor paused only for a second and continued with his lecture. "As you can see, cosmetically the subjects would stand out in a crowd... However what you can't see is how painful the procedure was. We had to place a powerful transmitter in her skull so she could communicate with her small allies... but that was small compared to when we injected these self replicating machines into her bloodstream.."

The Subject stood perfectly still and a small and raspy groan escaped her lips.

The Doctor seemed to be completely ignoring her.. But his eyes betrayed him. No matter how long he stood talking to the Raven, his eyes stayed fixed upon the Subject... And the security alert lever next to his hand.

"... We thought since we were injecting her with microscopic machines she would be fine being conscious. She screamed... Her vocal cords are completely shredded. We want you to repair her medically as best you can... She keeps only giving us cryptic messages."

The doctor tilted his head towards a small vid screen in the glass.... Slowly almost ethereal words were forming.

It will end tonight Doctor... You can't keep me Forever.
