The Budget Frame War Companion

Postby Atavism » Sat Mar 21, 2015 10:50 pm

So the budget brand war has been slowly dragging more and more manufacturers into chaos as time has passed, and is bigger than I ever imagined it could be. To help out people who might want to join in and need to know where to start and what's going on, I've set this up to aggregate all the threads into one place, indexed by date of first post. I've included short synopsis of their fluff and description, but if you would like your entry to say something else just let me know. Same goes for if I've missed anybody, just let me know and I'll add you in. Unless your fluff specifically ties your frame into this genre I'm just kind of guessing based on tone (advertising / humorous / self deprecation) and build (short / chubby / impractical).

----

Frames:

Twanks <Atavism> The premier brand and primary agitator of the Budget Brand War, Twanks LLC produces fat tanks on short little legs which are a favorite for budget minded Corporato-Dicatorships. Headed by the bombastic General Hezeraiah Twankus and a small crew of officers, Twanks LLC mostly relies on temp-for-hire servicemen.

Clankers <Skrob> The first brand to rise up and claim marketshare, Gallic Industries uses a creative multi-media approach to marketing their chibi-humanoid combat frames (and also wildly slanders the competition).

Twanzers <Lorc> An early competitor, Twanzers feature a twankenoid body design which utilizes thick barricade-stomping legs and come equipped with "nonlethal" armaments. Great for law enforcement!

Squibs <Fragsturbait> Produced by the Squib Science Syndicate which is headed by James Archibald Fragsturbait III, Squibs are chibi-humanoid frames featuring increasingly improbable design characteristics and soggy knees. The Squib Science Syndicate leans heavily and the Fragsturbait family businesses and alliteration to stay afloat.

Krate and Chib <Red_Robot> Maximoff Tiberius Krate, a man of indeterminate slavic origin, produces frames for "The People" out of scrap. Building off of discarded storage containers as chassis, Maximoff's frames come equipped with wide variety of "tools," which may include trans-orange chainsaws.

STMP <Mantisking> Stevens Technology's Multipurpose Platform, or STMP, is a relative oldcomer to the party that quietly made cheap, reliable frames long before their competitors. Stevens Technology seized upon the public's new-found interest in budget frames and raced into action to release a new, leggier model.

Karr-Tunn <Blorf> Following their phyrric victory against Astromax on the planet Kakkanad, Felix and his crew of malcontents have begun to produce frames based off of wooden shipping containers. Heavily featured in Transit Value Channel shopping programs, the Karr-Tunn will feature a free laser if you order soon!

TUB <A YATES INDUSTRIALS> Coming from the legendary manufacturer A. Yates Industrials, the TUB remains shrouded in secrecy. Offering only "Trouble for Twanks" and the promise of more to come, little is known about this micro-twankenoid design.

Unidentified Ijad Frame <Mraichelson> Rumors of Ijad chibi-scramblers are beginning to spread through military circles within the Union. Some suggest the Ijad have found a new, unathletic species to ally themselves with while xenopologists suggest it is possible for Ijad symbiotes to be as cheap as the rest of us.

HR-38 <Valtarshol> Human Resourced, captained by the fiery Valter Ceirn, has gone the opposite direction compared to other brands. The HR-38, or "munchkin masher," is a high-end (and high-expense) humanoid frame designed to protect the estates of wealthy customers from the hordes of budget frames sweeping the Union.

TRUNDLE <sBritcher> Britcher Industrials' TRUNDLE Compact Labor Frame offers an unusual cuboid body structure and virtually no room for the pilot. Cheap, easy to assemble, and very, very small, TRUNDLEs are often used as suicide bombs rather than full combat frames. TRUNDLEs are also a rising star in the sports world with the introduction of the increasingly popular Trundleball.

KBP-03 SNOTwalker <Deadborder> Designed to bolster the defensive garrisons of the Krimzon Guard, the SNOTwalker is an quadruped frame prominently equipped with a proprietary flamethrower. Praisingly described as "a frame" in expert reviews, the SNOTwalker is now becoming available to Guard-friendly regions.

Rumple <Zerovirus> This advanced twankenoid design combines the predatory stance of a striking raptor with the nubby armlessness of a domesticated chicken. All units come equipped with legs standard.

M5-1 "Mitten" <Gusindor> Mittens & Groane has dispatched its prized pitchman, Martin J. Mittens Jr, to sell their new humanoid frame, the M5-1 "Mitten." Competing with other budget frames by offering "arms," the Mitten now comes with a free log!

Crayfish <FrostCollar> Crawford™ has entered the combat frame market with a new insectoid design based off of their Venusian surveyor models. Capable of lifting heavy loads and armaments, Crawford™ goes out of its way to prove that four arms are better than none!™ (Now available in Regular and Petite!)

Tzank <z3r0> An upscale twankenoid design meant to appeal to a new demographic. The Tzank is produced by ZL.Ltd. under a licensing agreement with Twanks LLC. for the sake of peace.

Caled <DestinyPlayer> SFtech presents a new dynamic in dynamic fields! Powered by a Skisson’s Field reactor, the Caled can provide fire support as easily as it provides power on the go!

Twobby <Obbyking> Just a utilitarian support mech using a Twankenoid body style with appealing decals.

CK-S1 Squidge Mini Frame <Cake> More a powered armor than a full size frame, CK Industries is testing this unconventional weapon system to attack and harass frames. (If it doesn't get stepped on first.)

The Compacto <NimbusAConflict> NAC Industries "Compacto" Frame offers advanced leg technology and "arms." The Compacto has had the recent misfortune of being associated with a Extremist Terrorist Cult. All proceeds will go to the Ahk' Na'faun Relief Foundation.

TrundleChub <Blorf> The B-024d subcompact 'Trundlechub' offers all of the protection of a chub's head without all of that extra body to get in the way. As excellent for the battlefield as the farm.

B-XX <soriansj> The B-series frames produced by SAMS Technological and Industrial Solutions Inc. fills the gap between hardsuits and full on frames, and probably several other kinds of gap if you push them in hard enough!

Stud Buster<Dumpers> Built primarily from labor frame parts, the Stud Buster is also suitable for a variety of combat roles. Not that you'll need it to. Right...?

Virtue<Zerovirus> ZV Industries' new frame goes fast, and it looks good while doing so. The newest 'Virtue' frame model eschews complication for simplicity, but retains all the sleek angles and elegance ZV is known for.

HR-51 Turbo Midget <Valtarshol> Are you a diehard Human Resourced pilot, no matter the attraction of tiny, cheap deathtraps? Then we have a frame for you...

Tiny Twankenoids <Valtarshol> Free Colonist Mercenary group piloting street cleaning frames repurposed as engines of war after the loss of their custard factory.

HUNCH <NimbusAConflict> Chibi-Humanoid frame that lacks a delineated front and back, and is capable of switching between the two at will. Now with shuriken!

---

Pure Fanfic:

The Worm Farmers Rebellion by Red_Robot. Set on the impoverished and barely hospitable Gauldern 3, "The Worm Farmers Rebellion" follows a group of revolutionaries saddled with sub-par frames fighting against the Twank army of Reamer Investments Consortium.
Twank Sumo: Domingo's Story by Atavism. A short account of a Twank Sumo bout, focusing on the inner life of a Twank Luchadore.

---

New Games:

Trundleball <Blorf> A combination of rugby, soccer, and croquet, this frame sport adds a twist by making YOU the ball!
Twank Sumo <Luke_BMM> Push push push! Force your opponent out of the ring using a rock-paper-scissors dice mechanic.

---

Teams:

Trundleburgers
B-024 Subcompacts

I'm surprised at how unbiased this is.

My original idea was to sift out and all the fluff and aggregate it into a superthread, but I ultimately decided there wasn't enough narrative cohesion to justify the amount of work that'd entail. I settled for this, and since it is intended to be a public resource I really tried to do proper service to everyone who has participated so far by being as fair and factual as possible.

I figured I'd save the post where The General reads a list of his competitors' names and makes fart noises for later.

Don't think the Ijad haven't noticed this "put them in a cheap box and send them to die" plan and experimented with it as well.
I put together frame building kits (and links to folks selling companies) at MobileFra.me.

I'd been anxiously waiting for this to show up on the forum! I've added a listing for the flickr.

I've got an idea for a new frame percolating in my head but I haven't had the chance to sit down and work on it yet.

That's great! Hurry up! :D

Like I said, if you want me to write something else I'll take dictation, otherwise I'll just update it when you come out with your idea.

I've been working on the Crayfish myself for this! I'm cooking up alternate variants tonight and some action shots as well as some proper fluff.
