What'cha listening to?

Postby Ced23Ric » Sat Apr 21, 2012 10:30 am

A thread with history in almost any major forum, this shall be a repository of songs, music, bands and whats-nots that tickle your eardrums.

Just go ahead, present whatever you listen to, discuss music and hang out. It's like a club/rave/concert/show/party, and everyone's the DJ! :D

First up, something that I found today, because a friend of mine posted it on his FB wall:

Die Antwoord ~ I Fink U Freeky
A band from South Africa, producing a more danceable, electronic style of HipHop, Die Antwoord (which is Afrikaans for "The Answer") recently released this song.
Beats pump, rap is lined up with tempo of the song and the electronic melody makes it extremely danceable. Warning: Expletives are deffo present.

Enjoyable stuff to run, ride a bike/drive a car, play paintball or clean the house! :D

Patch (www.patchband.com) is pretty awesome, regardless of the fact that its my old band.

otherwise I've been big into lounge/triphop or soundtracks lately.

I am currently liking The Go! Team for project music. The Best of Bootie year-end compilations are pretty fun too. More appropriate to building that battles.

I love Die Antwoord!

I haven't been able to get Somebody That I Used To Know out of my head for two weeks. The rest of the album is OK, with one or two other good tracks. The rest of the album is too heavy on reference and light on innovation, compared to the standouts.

I've also been relistening to Michelle Shocked's Short, Sharp Shocked. It's punk Western. Pretty awesome.

I need something new, though! I don't wanna be that old guy who likes people who are, or sound like, his music from high school. Most recent albums I have right now are AIR's Voyage Dans La Lune, which is the only thing in my list from 2012. Wire's Red Barked Tree, Moby's Destroyed, and Battles' Gloss Drop are all from 2011. The Wire is pretty good, but I think Final Letter is their best album and they've never done another like it, and that's 20 years ago now. I don't remember Destroyed, unfortunately, which probably says something. Gloss Drop isn't as good at all as Mirrored, which is structurally and sonically one of the best albums I've ever heard. It was an excellent concert, though.

I can't recommend Yoko Kanno highly enough. She's an amazing and diverse composer. Her music for Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop are some of my favorite pieces of music, never mind favorite anime soundtracks. Macross Plus was the first anime soundtrack I actively sought out. I thought the movie wasn't that great, but the music made it beautiful.

I'm currently compiling a list of fitting music for Mobile Frame. So far, I've only found a few songs I really liked, but here's one of my favorites if ya'll want to add it to your own:

Old school punk rock from South Africa: National Wake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfF2newrEGM

Current Gypsy punk: Golgol Bordello http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM1Ahn0Osjo. When I first heard these guys I assumed they were smart ass ironic american suburbanites, it turns out they are smart ass ironic former eastern europeans. They have a documentary up on Netflix that is totally worth the time.

Edit: I was just going through their merch and found this obliquely related propaganda: http://gogolbordello.shop.musictoday.com/Product.aspx?cp=16160_16311&pc=GQCT35

Something for the colonists - Parkway Drive ~ Sleepwalker. ;)

Parkway Drive wrote:Consumed!
I feel the rage growing inside me, A fear I cannot contain.
At war with an enemy, Who does not rest, Who will never relent.
This city, These lifeless catacombs Our tombs they have become.
Buried alive at birth, Never to return.
chained to the masses,Trapped and trained by vicious minds
I let them tear away everything inside
Strip away my humanity, fracture my identity, Sacrifice my integrity.
Just bodies through the teeth of the combine
Just bodies through the teeth of the combine
At war, With an enemy, Who does not rest, who will never relent.
At war, With an enemy, Who does not rest who will never
Sleep walk our lives away, In search of shallow graves.
Sleep walk our live away.
Lost souls!
lost
Just bodies trough the teeth of the combine
Just bodies through the teeth
Consumed I feel the rage,
Growing inside me,I will not contain,
And I have come to question every truth I know.
Not one more step in the name of progress,
In the name of blind ambition.
How the **** am I supposed to feel,
When everything I know, lies broken at my feet
Not one more step in the name of progress,
In the name of blind ambition.
How the **** am I supposed to feel,
When everything I know, lies broken at my feet
