Monthly Mecha-Making Inspiration Game: Inaugural Edition!

Postby phayze81 » Sat Sep 16, 2017 3:30 pm

Hi! Discord users may already know, but I had the idea to start up a little forum game to help get everyone's creative gears churning, and hopefully encourage us all to play with some building and design ideas that are maybe a little outside of our comfort zone. I, for one, am super guilty of working myself into a design-rut, and I'm sure I'm not the only one!

Here's how it works: I'll post a pic of some Mecha artwork that I've found and we'll all have a go (or two, or six, or whatever) at building something inspired by it. Simple right? You could recreate the model in 7p, obviously, but maybe you're just really into a cool gun in the pic, or it gives you the idea to try a color scheme you've never used before. I don't want to sound like your highschool art teacher, but Inspiration can mean whatever you want it to mean, so go nuts!

Alright, enough of me rambling! Here's September's Inspiration:

Now.... Show us what you got! :D

EDIT: changed the source link to point at the original source, instead of pinterest. Thanks for the suggestion, Atavism!

Here's what I've come up with, though I'm already thinking through a second attempt.

My take, a little overworked, but that's how I tend to build...
(Image updated on sept 20th 2017 to make the shoulder a little cleaner, and match the elbow connection with the knee, this way I can get rid of the ball connection that I had on the elbow, that I think is a bit like cheating... because it's too good )

So cool! I'm a big fan over overworked, personally. :D

I really love those doubled padlock plates on the back knees.

DANG, that looks SICK!
Really though, beautiful build and I hope it gets bricked in real life at some point.
I still haven't started my submission... :?

I like how you made the body, particularly the spine, and the rear legs attachment, which I can't figure out what piece is that between the lamp holder and the hinge plates. Can you share? I'm very curious. It's nice that you can always learn something from everybody.

Thanks (if you refer to my build), but it's too flimsy, it would be a nightmare to adjust every time. That's why I think it's a bit over worked.

Thanks! I was really focused on the weird posture of the original, and trying to keep the part count down. That part your looking at is this one: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/ca ... =20482#T=C

Making opportunities to learn from each other is a big part of this challenge. ^^ M glad it's already working!

Really nice stuff so far. I really want to compliment phayze81 for putting this entire idea together, I thinks it's a really neat thing to do :D . I also like the mid section connection and the shoulder / head combo you came up with. :)

really really digging the head and pose. And like Aardvark17, I haven't started mine either  Although when I saw the artwork, it reminded me, not of the Suma Crah frames, but of The Verge frames (viewtopic.php?f=12&t=7712).

Thanks, that's one of the "new" parts that I'm still not used to. I'm always looking for ways to change the direction of the studs, and I didn't know that trick :)

I finally got around to making an entry for this contest!
I listened to my playlist and did one LDD session for an hour and a half-ish and finally got it done. I'm pretty proud of the result, it's a very different kind of frame from my usual stuff, which is good to do every once in a while.
Kind of bad Snipping Tooled pics but I also have a link to it on Sketchfab for a better look.

No idea what this would be like in terms of studryness or looks in real life. Also, copper for life! XD

You can be proud ;) it has a very nice shape. And I like the gun, I couldn't get that shape myself, nice job!
I think I like this kind of chalenge more than building from scratch, I've been doing it myself for a while with Battletech stuff, but this feline mech that phayze81 proposed really is pushing every one's skills

Thanks @pepitosegrilla!
If I ever get enough of some of those parts I'll brick it up to see how stable it is. Might be cool as a game piece

Great stuff, everybody! I can't tell you how happy I am to see this idea taking off! Looking at everyone else's entries has given me some ideas to improve mine, so hopefully I'll be able to get out a v2 this weekend.

October is only a week away, and I've got something pretty cool locked and loaded for us, so get those September builds posted now! ^^
