Master Chubdam Database

So it was suggested that I create a master location for all the Chubdams. I'll post the best bits up here (updating any revamps as I go), and add additional shots in future posts. Break downs available upon request. Thinking of adding standard examples of how to add the DAM! to your Chubs as well.

EDIT: Now build a Chubdam in Stud.io with this file! https://www.dropbox.com/s/m75hkxu9gqe2y ... am.io?dl=0

Chubdam break down! This has been requested several times, so I figured I'd throw something together.

What makes a Chub a Chubdam? Parts usage and color choice! There are four major areas of the Chub that are modified parts wise to create a Chubdam; head, chest, hips, and feet. There are plenty of options from there to further refine a Chubdam such as the shield, frontal skirt armor, back plasma edge storage points, and shoulders, but aren't as necessary to capture the Gundam influence.

Of course Gundams come in all shapes, styles, and colors, but we will focus on the original RX-78-2 inspired Chubdam for this breakdown.

ImageStages of Chub to Chubdam by The Hydromancer, on Flickr

The first picture represents the evolution of Chub to Chubdam. On the far left is a lightly customized Chub. Center is a Chub that has Chubdam style hip connections, side skirt armor, and partial Chubdam style feet. Even though it uses almost half of the minimum major modifications for creating a Chubdam, it doesn't really look like a Chubdam yet. The color choice in particular really prevents it from completing the change. On the right, we have a fully fleshed out Chubdam! Note the use of proper color choice to really make the homage stick. The Chubdam should be instantly recognizable to any Gundam fan. We'll tackle each area in turn to explain parts usage and connections, with both a front and back view of a partially broken down Chubdam for reference. By this end of this if you can build a Chub, you'll be able to build a Chubdam too!

ImageChubdam 3.0 break down by The Hydromancer, on Flickr

ImageChubdam break down back by The Hydromancer, on Flickr

Major Areas:

-Head-
The Chubdam head is very distinctive and goes a long way towards creating the Chubdam look. The head consists of a vertical tooth plate with a horizontal clip plate on top. The clip plate holds a handlebar that acts as the V-fin. Unfortunately the handlebars don't come in white or yellow/gold as far as I know, but I find red or light grey does the trick just fine. Note; you'll need to flip the neck right side up from a standard Chub.

-Chest-
Chubdam chests are a varied as Gundam chests are, but the basic Chubdam chest is simple and easy to create. Add a grill, usually yellow, to the front of the torso taps to create the two toned chest vents. On the bottom of the chest add a jumper plate and a smooth slope to complete the chest. The slope will cut the grill in have, creating the image of symmetrical chest vents on either side of the chest.

If you want to capture the black interior of the chest vents, note you'll need to make sure the top and bottom of the Chubdam's torso are connected on the rear of the frame as you'll need to remove the chest plate that helps hold the frame together. I've found that the standard Chub power pack doesn't hold the frame together very well on its own, so I recommend simply moving the chest plate to the back. In the example above, I've added a round plate to the back to strengthen the connections.

-Hips-

The hips are a major departure from the basic Chub frame so take special note. The Chubdam hips came about when I read that many builders found that the tile clip that connected the legs to the waist taps had a habit of breaking over prolonged time in the connection. I decided to follow the advice to replace the tile clips with bar claws similar to the should joints. This connection worked great, but I didn't like how exposed this left the top of the legs so I decided to hide the gaps as best I could. The solution is to first flip the taps so that the studs are in front. Be careful to not push the taps into the center pelvic brick as you'll need some clearance for the next part.

Second, add neck brackets to the tap studs, angling the stud on the brackets up at about a 45 degree angle. Add smooth slopes to the brackets for side skirt armor, and test the brackets by rotating it up and down. You should have just enough clearance to rotate the brackets; if you don't try pulling the taps slightly out from the pelvic brick. You can achieve small but noticeable style variations depending on the positioning of the side armor. I recommend keeping them as vertical as possible, but raising them up can create a flared look.

Finally, replace the tile armor on the top of the legs with a smooth slope to cover the front of the gap. The leg and bracket slopes should box in the connection gap, hiding it. If you wish, you could also add a plate to the back of the tap to fully box in the taps. While not necessary to completely box in the gap, adding plates to the back could help increase standing stability at the cost of further reduced hip joint flexibility.

-Feet-

The area I've probably received the most admiration on, the feet are both functional (longer feet for better stability) and aesthetically pleasing. First replace the lower frontal tile armor with a cheese wedge, sloping down.

Next replace the side armor dishes with horizontal tooth plates, teeth forward, rotating the teeth downward until the top of the teeth is perfectly flush with the cheese wedge slope.

Lastly, replace the bottom foot plate with a handlebar plate. Add a clip tile to the handlebar plate, and rotate the clip tile as far as you can back to rest against the cheese wedge.

Minor Areas:

-Shoulders-

Shoulders are less standard for Chubdams, varying as the Gundam influences do. For the standard Chubdam, ignore the standard Chub shoulder armor. Add a round plate first; this will allow the shoulder armor to easily rotate.

Secondly add a brick with a stud on one side, facing the stud up.

Third, add a cheese wedge to the side of the brick, this time sloping upward.

Finally, add a 2x1 tile to the top stud, aligning it with the end of the cheese wedge.

-Hilt storage-

For a simple yet effective storage point for plasma edge hilts, replace the tile clips behind the head with upside down plates with tubes, just like the shoulder piece. Tilt these down as far as they will go, and add the hilts to store them.

-Shield-

I'm a huge fan of Soren's classic Chub shield. Its so simple yet versatile. Orient it so the clips are on top, and add a bar plate (the version without the free sides unlike the part on the back of the Chubdam otherwise it won't fit) with a grill on it.

Alternatively, you could orient the clips forward for a different approach (reference the middle Chub in the first pic). Depending on how forward you attach the shield to the arm, you could completely fold the shield to cover the hand. This makes for a shield that look like it be used for punching as well. Slap some vertical teeth or cheese wedges for spikes on it, and it looks that much more deadly!

-Frontal Skirt Armor-

This is one of the newest parts of the Chubdam build, and I'm still experimenting with. On the front of the pelvic brick, add a clip tile oriented vertically. Next add a handlebar similar to the one used for a V-fin, prongs angled up and inward. Add plates with tubes on the prongs, and fold the handlebar back. Rotate the plates with tubes flat against the frame, and add tiles on top.

ImageClavicle cannons by The Hydromancer, on Flickr

-Clavicle cannons-
Although not shown here on the standard Chubdam, a single yet powerful detail to further enchance a Chubdam that could easily be applied across a far range of Chubdam styles is the clavicle mounted auto cannons. Simply attach a minifig hand (ideally yellow or gray) to the expose tap end clavicles on either side of the head and voila, point defense systems!

System Key:

And that's all there is to it! Using the basic Chubdam model you should be able to make countless versions to bring your favorite Gundams to lego life. That said, if there is another Chubdam you'd like to see a more detailed break down of just let me know.

The final Gundam Meister inpisred frame is complete! Although I might build additional Gundam 00 styled MFs in the future (Looking at you Flag!) for now I'll settle for a Celestial Being inspired company. I think I want to revamp the Duelist before I take an epic group shot though. No rest for the wicked :P

The fourth and final Ijad ace custom to appear on the battlefields of Colonia II, the Chevalion was perhaps the most beautiful. And deadly. Its Mega Claw simply ended the enemies of the Ijad. Driven point first at high speeds into a target or crushing said target in its ulitmate grasp, the Mega Claw laid low all.

So light and fast, the Chevalion was the only one of the anti-grav enhanced Chubdams to actually fly over the warscape. A leaf on the wind, it could not be touched. The Ijad mobile frame was never observed by the other factions to so much as touch the ground.

How was the FCCs, UMFL, Dramstellar, or the Krewstara Consortium supposed to match such a foe?

Systems Key:
Mega Claw: d6Rh d6Rh d8Rh
Flight System: d6B
Clavicle Antennas: d6Y

Additional Notes:
The Mega Claw is heavy, and as I've experienced all too much in the past the standard Chub arms dislike heavy objects. It may be time to finally redesign them, but I'm concerned about losing the classic Chub look too much. Things to ponder on....

As always, CCC welcomed.

The megaclaw is a gorgeous design. I know how hard it is to make claws that look good open and closed, and you nailed it. The coloration is perfect.

If the frame won't tolerate an arm-mounted claw, you could consider back-mounting it. The CHUB base is pretty well balanced, and can handle some extra weight on the back.

A good idea. The GN drive is kinda in the way though. Its staying put for now, but its so fragile. Almost enough to make me what to super glue the shoulder joint together.

Ever since I saw BrickBudgie's Princess Powerful and his great part usage with the grey bananas as a ponytail I've wanted to try a particular build. Thought about it all today at work in particular and decided to give it a go before fixing Duelist.

Presenting Chubdam Ashildr, inspired by Nobel Gundam!

Reeling from attacks on all sides, the Krewstara Consortium desperately ramped up research and production of their Chubdam line. Unfortunately finding qualified pilots was proving difficult, even having lured/coerced some UMFL pilots to their banner. To the surprise of many of the elite members of the remaining families, the Fiance of the Black Prince himself offered her services on the front lines. Lady Amelia Fane Da Costa was a noted rooftop racer and extreme sport pilot, but had no combat training. A high ranking member of her own family, and not to mention being engaged to the leader of the Megacorp, it was shocking that she even considered such a dangerous choice. Lady Da Costa threw herself into the crash course combat pilot training with a razor honed focus and intensity, blowing through even the most challenging simulators.

Upon her completion of live fire exercises, the Black Prince personally presented Lady Da Costa with the Consortium's latest Chubdam, Ashildr. Designed to make the most of the pilot's experience, Chubdam Ashildr was the most mobile of the Krewstara mobile frames. Powerful duskskates build directly into the heels of the frame provided tremendous mobility. A zero ranged fusion edge mounted on a high strength whip allowed the Ashildr to strike with lightning fast attacks while on the move, flowing from dodge to whip and back without missing a beat. As most Chubdams, the Ashlidr's V-fin antenna keep Lady Da Costa in contact with her company. Although the Ashildr represented little in new tech, the slimmed build proved that greater mobility was achievable and that weight could be safely reduced further than what the original Chubdam design had already proved from the standard Chub.

Despite all that had gone wrong, the Krewstara Consortium clearly intended to double down.

System Key:
Fusion Edge Whip: d6Rh d6Rh d8Rh
Duskskate Heels: d6B
V-fin Antenna: d6Y

Alternate Systems:
Ponytail Antenna: d6Y
Heart Blaster: d8Rr

Notes:
Ideally I'll replace the chest heart with a ribbon when I get my hands on one. Maybe replace the white tooth plates on the feet with red ones. Additionally if they would ever release blue neck brackets I could fix the hips as well. Ah well, one day.

Decided to revamp and simplify the Duelist. Dropped the Full Armor for now as I felt it was too bulky and needed to be refined with the knowledge gained from working with mixel joints lately.

Lots of small adjustments all over the frame, but the biggest was probably completely rebuilding the GN pistols. Much slimmer and more pistol sized now, at least compared to what they looked like before.

I think with this revamp I'm done with this particular company now, and dubbing it the Sinstrals.

A pistol made of a claw, a flick fire missile and an 1x1 round. With an optional axe head bayonet.

This is gold on so may levels, this is the very kind of MF0 armament that I love. Detailed but still subdued enough to look realistic and not obscure the mech itself.

You sir, won the Internet for today!

These have a really cool look. The slightly oversized weapons make them alost chibi-looking.

I think my favourite is the Onager for those clever spiky knees.

You guys have hit on some of my own favorite bits. The new pistols look so much better than the original ones. And those knee spikes I designed a while ago for my first attempt at an Osprey, but felt like they didn't mesh with the over all frame. Really glad they worked so well with the Onager, even though its not a part of the original design.

Some as some of you know, the GM Quel is one of my favorite grunt units from Gundam. I've done a LDD build before, but LDD never looks as good as brick. Sadly the trade off for having every brick and color to play with.

Despite the setbacks in losing the Chubdam MKII, Dramstellar was able to salvage enough data for their new mass production mobile frame line based off the Chubdam high performance series. The first series, the CM Lanshrike, was designed on the common Chub chassis for ease of logistics, with Chubdam design improvements added on over it. The new mobile frame design included only one new feature, the addition of leg mounted optic sensors. These sensors provided additional situational awareness closer to group level, leading many colonists to suspect that the new frame was at least partially intended for riot suppression and subjugation.

In order to improve public relations, a more human face was built for the first line model of the new mass produced CM Lanshrike series. Response was... mixed.

System Key:
Riot Shotgun: d6Rh d6Rd
Frame Shield: d6B
Leg mounted optics: d6Y
Head fins: d6Y

Notes: Realized I had most of a Quel on hand, and decided to mock it up while waiting for the head and a few other parts to arrive. Had a Kreo transformer sitting around looking ugly, and figured what the hell. Was inspired by Deathzero's Chubdam X Divider on the FB page to try a more dynamic, imposing stance. Not sure how well I succeeded.

So I'm not sure how I feel about the idea behind Sailor Gundam Nobel, but you totally rocked the build. Love those feet particularly.

Thinking of replacing the white tooth plates on the feet with red ones, give it more of tall boot look.

What started off as an idea for a space based mobile frame for IO after digging Patrick Boyle's Veritech fighters evolved into something... more. Presenting the CM Moai (based off the B Gundam/GM Ball). A luxury budget frame perhaps?

Developed from Chubdam technology, the prototype CM Moai represents an attempt by the Ijad to create cost effective mobile frames in a space environment. The Moai serves as a rear 'shoot and scoot' artillery platform designed to augment more traditional MFs that can protect the more fragile 'spaceball.'

Notes: Going to have to create a standard GM Ball design while I'm at it. I think I did decide on how to make IO sized versions as well.

So apparently I inspired Matt Gordon on the FB page to try his hand at the Mega Dinozord. I thought it was pretty nifty. Then I thought, Chubdam style? Presenting the Mega Chord.

On the distant Colony of Angel's Grave, five teenage Ijad 'with attitude' were chosen to defend their home world, and battle the evil forces of the Solar Union. Each was gifted with a fierce xeno-form to bond with, and a custom mobile frame to take advantage of their innate power. When the going gets tough however, the five smaller mobile frames can combine to form the awesome Mega Chord! Now Jaysun, Z'Ack, Bilee, Kimbrahlee, and Treeni fight the good fight as the Mighty Militarized Protector Regiment!

System Key:
Hidden Trunk Missile: d8Rr
Mega Sword: d6Rh d6Rh d8Rh
Mastodon Shield: d6B
Spike Crown Antenna Array: d6Y

Notes: Going to have to build that shield one day, just need the vents. Might do a Dragonchub (Chubgon? Chubdram? Dragdam?) next, and prehaps add a combined version as well. I do believe I've gone mad with LDD power.

Does the lance piece actually come in grey? This is an excellent power sword!

Pretty sure that grey is the lance (spear?) standard color. Glad you like the combo, props to DeathZero for suggesting the Ninjago base.

Nice, I have a bunch of them in brown, but never saw one in grey.

So after designing the Mega Chord, I tried fooling around with a Dragon Zord inspired build, but it went no where (for now!). I did sorta accidently get side tracked and mostly design an Alteisen, but that was more of a fun exercise. I might built that one in brick first one day. Today though I was really feeling the Voltron vibe, and after listening to the theme on youtube, and various metal covers, I produced this lil guy. The Voltrub! (Although I'm getting a lot of votes for Volchub as well....)

The Ijad continued to experiment with combining smaller mobile frames into a larger more powerful version. On the planet Argus, the research and development institution known locally simply as the University worked with a variation of the Mega Chord. The second test type went in a different direction from the original, instead opting to combine multiple variations of the same xeno-form. The test pilots bonded with the highly aggressive and tenacious Gorlions native to the planet, and together these bonded pairs helped to hold the line in an unexpected Ijadian civil war.

To cut through the endless waves of opposing bonded dire beasts, the heroic Ijad could combine their Gorlion frames into the mighty Voltrub, Defender of the University!
