"Gonzo" mobile rocket platforms [SSC]

Postby Lorc » Sun Oct 12, 2014 12:28 pm

This started as a single-set challenge of the Mixel Wizwuz, but I was so pleased with the result that I bought another so I'd have a pair. There's even enough parts left over that someone more gifted than me could probably make a station too. I have a third one (unassembled) and am looking forward to seeing if I can wring another alt loadout from this set.

The next time someone asks what sets to buy to get started with MFZ, tell them to order a handful of WizWuz's. Fantastic parts selection at a bargain price.

Image

d6W d6W The left hand Gonzo is a basic soldier loadout
d6Rd d6Rd with dual direct-fire rocket pods
d6B ECM "horns"
d6G all-terrain legs
d6Y articulated sensor pylon (the nose)

The right-hand Gonzo is an artillery model that has exchanged the direct-fire pods for an MLRS and long-range sensor pod ( d6Ra d6Ra and +1 d6Y )

There's not many changes I'd make with access to a full parts bin. Fill in a couple of undercuts with 1*1 plates. Tart up the missile pods and replace the round white 1*1s with round tiles.

I'm still feeling pleased about the MLRS, though I'd like to replace the red cross-pin holding it together with a black one if I can.

Those "Gonzo" faces are just delightful.

IDK, Lorc, I really like what you did better than what I did. When I opened that set, for some reason I didn't see anything but a melee frame. Now I'm not sure why as I now see this great artillery and support frame.

Guess what, there was a third loadout to be found in the Wizwuz set.

Image

d6W d6W d6Rh d6Rh d6B d6B d6G d6Y I think for the pointman with the ECM antlers.

Also did some minor tweaking to the other two frames.

The two stations at the back were both made from a single Mesmo mixel set.

Image

Gonzo-class quadmechs can also be outfitted with Sonic Imagers for Low-Light Extraterrestrial Environments, aka SILLEE optics.

Image

I've ordered more mixels to try and expand these into a full company. So far I've resisted the itch to dip into the parts bin and it tickles me to make a company entirely made from one set.

I stayed away from the Mesmo set 'cause the wings looked like they'd be absolutely no use for building in this scale, but I like them!

I believe pairing the SILLEEs like that is actually all that the Responsive Imaging Doppler Oculus system is.

These are great! While this is a nice solid quad design I really appreciate the loadout variations. The chained clips for the systems, while being a functional necessity, have a good look to them. The double curve & L-bracket legs have a nice finished look (non-SSC). Have you tried the claws on the inside of the front legs on the L-bracket for a HtH system? I think I've got most of the core design worked out, but not usre how you finished the back. Can you include a back-side shot next time you update?

Mesmo was my least favorite of the Wiztastics, but using the set for stations is a good call (any chance of working a 4x4 base, maybe from the Wizwuz leftovers?). The wing looks Ijad-y and the stations go well with the frames.

I swear I posted on this already O_o I love the praying mantis style head. Gonzo absolutely, but I still see Zorak. Would be cool to see in green. I accidently ordered two sets of the magic tribe, and while I haven't used any of the others yet I totally agree that they are awesome, especially this gem.

Thanks. I think I have enough pieces from these to give the stations bases, but I'm trying to stay disciplined and keep each build independent. I may yet disassemble them and have another go at SSCing Mesmo.

I couldn't arrange the spikes on the legs in an orientation that pleased me, that's why I ended up going with antlers. I think it worked out for the best though.

The chained clips are definitely a fudge, but on the artillery frame the weapon stalks actually lie flush against the body, which is cool.

And I'll take some rear photos when I can get some light (probably weekend). It's not a complicated build though - just the 2*2 slope piece tucked under the two 1*1 curves.

Two new Gonzos join the company

Image

On the left we have a vicious melee specialist that trades in its rocket pods for some nasty-looking d6Rh d6Rh jaws and d6G d6G d8G from those booster jets on its sides plus no ranged attack.

On the right is a sensor specialist with d6Y d6Y and still has room for the standard-issue d6Rd d6Rd rocket pods.

I continue to be surprised by how many loadouts can be squeezed from this set. I think I'm at saturation though. I like the sensor pylons on the spotter, but those missile pods were a bit of a stretch for the parts. And the melee variant certainly looks ferocious, but I don't think those jaws match the rest of the company's style. It might be time to start working on aftermarket modifications...

Image
This is what I have planned for the legs, adding a bit more detail without too much bulk. It'll require a bricklink order to outfit the whole company though, so I'll keep tinkering with systems in the meantime.

Image
A group shot of all five.

This is amazing seeing a whole squad of frames built from just Mixels. The fact that they have so many load outs too, what other Mixel sets have this much variety I wonder?

It turns out that Wizwuz still had more to give - SSC Wizwuz stations:

Image

Coretappers. They harvest valuable underground minerals and that lovely blue plume is the waste gasses being burned off. Or perhaps they're portable geothermal generators.

They could make decent IO ships too, if there was an easy way to mount them horizontally (I'd move the blue plume to the back to be the drive torch)

They're pretty posable too - which is not something you'd expect from a station. Great fun just fiddling with them. You could say that they squat down when deployed, open up to vent, retract to avoid damage during a fight etc etc etc. But at the end of the day I prefer the closed look so I'll keep them like that and everything else is an easter egg.

Assembly diagram for anyone interested:

Total tally: 5 differently-armed frames and three stations from the same set. I am three single-shot rockets from having a Single Set Company.

Great looking stations! This continues to be my favorite SSC. Inspires me to got back and play with it some more.

Those stations are terrific! The poseability gives them a great variety.

These look great! They are honestly some of my favorite frames now, and I really want to buy a bunch of WizWuz's now to try to make them. I love the look with the SILLEE optics on, they look wonderfully goofy. Great job! :D
