Single Set Challenge: 41512, 41513, 41514

My Single Set Challenge shot at Fang Gang, the second tribe from Series2 Mixels.

I really wasn't excited about working with these sets and forced myself to work with them by holding the Flexers, the orange tribe, out like a carrot on a stick. The brown palate and relatively bad parts selections, compared to other Mixels sets, was not inspiring. As always, the goal was a frame and a station from each.

Left to right:
MFZ-41512 "Chomly" aka "Pillbug" (with station)
MFZ-41513 "Gobba" aka "Owlbear" (with high capacity missile battery system)
MFZ-41514 "Jawg" aka "Thrasher" ("Long-billed" variant)

Thoughts:
- Parts: Not a fan of brown, but if you are, there's LOTS of cheese in both brown and dark brown, plenty of 1x2 curved slopes (baby bows), and lots of brown tile clips.
- Parts: Lots of small pcs, lots of large pcs, very few medium sized pcs to build structure (bodies, limbs). The large pcs are rather difficult to build around.
- Parts: Very little to support weapons or other systems.
- Parts: The lowest count of balljoints (and hinges for that matter) for a tribe yet.
- 41514: contains no ball joint pcs, the go-to part for these sets. And while there are quite a few tileclips, there are only 2 handle pcs. The 1x4 mod'd plates aren't useless, but they aren't balljoints/hinges/clickhinges. 41514 is the worst Mixel set so far for building frames.
- The set from any particular tribe / color range that contains the Nixel is typically the best deal: the parts count is higher and the Nixels some have good pcs. Two tribes into Series2 and it's obvious that TLG is only going to do three Nixel designs. These are the same from Series1.
- While SSCs require some flexibility in theme/aesthetic, I try to build something as close to a Solar Calendar feel as I can. For me, these are the farthest off that mark.
- 41512 is my favorite of the three, and I did manage a station from the set too, but overall I'm not a fan of the Fang Gang for MFZ SSCs.

C&C solicited as always! Off to work with the Flexers!

Ok, this is a little off topic / off scale, but it's too awesome not to share.
Ezra Wibowo on Flickr created a Nixel hardsuit from Mixels.

I like the segmenting effect on the Pillbug. I should get these soon. I've had some ideas about putting together a brown and gold color mech.

Apart from the bland color schemes, which of course are a limitation of the challenge, you made some really excellent looking mechs from very few parts. The Pillbug is awesome, I think. It's very tanky and stompy, and the ball joints are used in a way that doesn't make them obvious (I think the new joints have potential but tend to be ugly). Love the Pillbug.

The Owlbear looks good, but the name is a little odd to me considering the head is near the stomach. ;) The Thrasher has a classic look that will never go out of style; rail guns are always great.

You crushed this challenge, my friend.

I was picturing an owlbear hunched over with a missile rack on it's back.

Oohhhh, I can see that. Missile racks, huh? Owlbear = Boomkin form?

"No; out of missiles."

I put together frame building kits (and links to folks selling companies) at MobileFra.me.
