Single Set Challenge: 75002

Postby darksyntax » Mon Nov 11, 2013 8:59 pm

I finally threw down with the Star Wars AT-RT set (75002).

I picked up a set many months ago for parts (222 pieces for $16.14 on Amazon, free shipping with Prime), but didn't look too closely at it. A G+ post a month back had me take a second look... in the Single Set Challenge light. :D

I went into this with the same goals as my 31005 SSC: 4 frames, approx 7bricks tall, with some uniformity, and 2-3 stations. I ended up with 3 frames and 2 stations.

Unnamed Soldier d6W d6W d6Rd d6Rd d6Y d6B d6G (arm cannon, comm's antenna, shoulder shield, jump jet)
Unnamed Melee d6W d6W d6Rh d6Rh d6B d6B d6Y d8G (ripper claw, shoulder shield & hand shield, comm's antenna)
Unnamed Chickenwalker d6W d6W d6Ra d6Ra d8Ra d6B d6G (howitzer & targeting system, leg armor panels, jump jet)

I'd classify the two humanoid frames as serviceable, but I do like the modularity of the wide shoulder handles and the rail on the back. I really like the look of the chickenwalker however. I might actually use that as a base for a frame design outside this SCC. The stations are also just serviceable.

My leftovers.

Some thoughts on the set:
8-) The Good: This thing is really dense with MFZ-parts; lots of snot, bars, and clips. Plus it has 1/2 a ruler and 2 flags!
 The Bad: There's not many duplicate parts. From my building, I've learned that I typically need 8-10 of 1-2 parts rather than 1-2 of 8-10 parts.
 The Ugly (sort of): I picked up a second set "sans-minifigs" as I didn't have much use for the clone trooper, yoda, or the commando droid for $10 US (including shipping) from a seller on Amazon. What I didn't realize was that the droideka is also one of said "minifigs" so I missed out on many of the key MFZ pieces this set offers. Still it was ~180 parts for $10 US and included 4x 1x4 click-hinge bricks to complete a ruler.

C&C solicited as always.

I picked up this set a few weeks ago and was pretty happy with it. Though I agree with you, it just doesn't come with enough duplicate parts to be particularly useful for frame building.

That said I like the torso on your humanoid frames. I know this was an SSC, but I think you can use those torsos as a base for something really cool. They have a nice bulky vibe that screams close assault or heavy weapon mech.

And I think this set might be useful for Alpha Bandit...

I also have this set and I really like it. As you said, it has a fair amount of good pieces, and for me it was especially handy as the colour scheme fit my 133rd company perfectly. I mostly used it for stations as I'd already made the frames for the most part.

I've been eyeballing this set every time I walk into the Lego section in any retail store. One of these days I will pull the trigger.

I bought this a couple months ago, it's great at its price point. You won't build too much in terms of complete Frames out of this but almost everything is quite useful for parts.

I thought 3 kitted frames, 2 stations (with flags) and 1/2 a ruler was pretty good. Just need SSR's and those could be had from a polybag or maybe even by moving some parts around in this set. $32 on Amazon gets you reasonably sized company; if you went 5 frames and 3 stations, there'd be plenty of parts for changing up the loadouts.

Well- I meant that in the sense of building other people's models, especially the popular travis and t-bar based ones.

I gotcha. Not sure if we're ever going to see a ~200pc set for ~$20 US with 10clips, 10taps, 10T's, and 10travi though.

Maybe not but if they did, they probably wouldn't be able to keep them stocked. :P

MK's SSC's have gotten me infatuated with Lego Alternate Models in general, not just for MFZ. I saw this one and just had to share.
