Those are really neat.

The proportions are great and it's nice to see old hinge plates again!

Because they are, in many different ways.

If I'm not mistaken they exist at least since the 80's, and we don't see them in frames as much as before, at least that's how I perceive it.

Best guess is most people here remember growing up with them.
